St Ives?

(Claire), 8 January, 2013 at 11:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

H and I are looking at booking a mini break to St Ives this year. I’ve never been to Cornwall shock horror. Can any of you suggest the best time of year to go, or more importantly, the months to avoid?

St Ives is lush. But like any beautiful Cornish seaside town, summer can be a nightmare. However, it's worth it. St Ives is a home for British art and you can't walk down a street (and believe me, some of the streets are very, very steeply down) without popping into little cottage museums or discovering secret gardens of statues. You have to visit the Barbara Hepworth Museum and, of course, the Tate.

So, in your shoes, I'd have a look to see when there are various arts festivals on and go then. It will be fabulous.

Ooo I love St Ives. My best mate lives there and we're going down again in the summer.

Avoid school holidays if you can, it gets so busy and price of cottages are horrendous. If you drive and you go out of season get somewhere with parking if you can, otherwise you have to park in one of the car parks dotted about the town. They get very busy with holiday makers and day trippers so if you wanted to pop out for a day you might not have a space when you get back.

Carbis Bay sometimes advertises itself as Carbis Bay, St Ives and holiday lets are cheaper there but it is on the outskirts, not in the actual town itself.

Do you have an idea of where you'll be staying in mind?

ETA after reading FTLOMB's reply, they have the St Ives Festival every September https://www.stivesseptemberfestival.co.uk/

We had our first honeymoon in Cornwall! It's beautiful there, and as FTLOMB says, so many fabulous arty places. We bought a fab etching whilst we were there and it hangs in our bedroom ?

We had a lovely cottage on the Carbis Bay/St Ives border. There are regular buses although there's a beautiful coastal walk between the two (or a shorter, less picturesque pathway walk if you prefer). We stayed here and were spoilt with wine, homemade scones and all sorts of yummy things.

    I love it there!

As others have said, summer will be busy but it's worth it. There's such a fantastic atmosphere there especially in the summer.

I found a really nice bar that had a terrace on the first floor which overlooked the sea, simply beautiful to be sipping a cocktail at night watching the sea. Cannot for the life of me remember the name of the bar but I'm sure there must be a few with fab views.

We have decided go with our bestys but we couldnt get an apartment for less than 7 nights because of the time we want to go, and the hotels were too expensive, so get this we've booked a cottage on a Hoseasons sight in Hayle, which I believe is just 3 miles outside of St Ives, for the grand total of £200 between the 4 of us. I'm waiting for the catch but I've been on trip advisor and the reviews are brilliant! So we are over the moon.

St Ives is absolutely beautiful. Ive been twice. Both times during May, and the weather was mega hot, a gorgeous weekend! The weather can never seem to make up its mind nowadays though.

St. Ives is lovely. Paidstow is really nice too. OH is from Cornwall so we're down there quite often. It's lovely, but just a nightmare of a journey down. My last journey back was a real treat. It was during the floods and I came back early on the train to go to a friend's birthday do. Took 9 hrs!
