Stand up Buffet reception

LuxuriousBrownFlowers65748, 21 January, 2018 at 10:13 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi all

we are getting married in October 2018 and we have found ourselves a function hall attached to a local pub with its own little bar.

we're having a town hall ceremony at 2.15 and then our guests will probably get to our reception venue around 3.30-4pm.

we want a very relaxed, informal reception and are thinking if having drinks and canapés whilst we're off having photos followed by a buffet.

im not sure though about seating. My fiancé is suggesting no tables and seating at all except for the older guests and that we have a relaxed, mingling stand up buffet.

however I'm worried this isn't going to go down too well.

has anyone done something similar or been to a similar wedding?

any recommendations for pros and cons?

I would say even if you don’t have tables, give people somewhere to sit - that’s a long time to ask people to stand and eating while standing up isn’t particularly fun!

Where I used to work, instead of a sit down Christmas dinner, they had a hot fork buffet instead. It was so inconvenient as there wasn't a lot of places to sit or lean against or set your drink down. How are your guests meant to eat a plate of food with a drink in their hand, and expect most people to stand all night? I really think you should reconsider this one.

I’m having a hogroast and we only have some barrels and bales for people to use as tables and seats. I’ve made sure people have china plates so there aren’t folding paper plate issues.

Thank you all for your comments and advice. I’m definitely steering towards having proper tables and chairs, even if we don’t do a proper seating plan apart from the top table.

Not having a sit down meal and table is fine particularly if you are having a relaxed feel to the wedding. But I do recommend having enough sitting. Think ladies coming in high heels and not being about to sit down for hours?
