flailing wildly

standards really are dropping

I've seen two really heinous spellies on the TV today. Is the end nigh?

Firstly, on BBC News, the strap across the screen heralded the 'aftermath of the chima earthquake'

And now, on a TV commercial (which you'd think would at least be subject to a little more examination before airing than live news) - on the OK! magazine advert, they boast of a 'Lindsey Lohan exlusive'.

<sobs a little>

I totally agree with you. These mistakes really irritate me. I work as a QA for computer based exams and spend my life checking spellings etc. It drives me mad when I read through an article etc and see such obvious mistakes.

btw... did you put spellies on purpose to fit in with the theme of the post? ?

Where, where? I have had a bottle of wine, my fingers aren't working ? I must correct them immediately if so.

lol!! Must definately have been the wine!!!!!

What gets me is that some of the stuff I check has been provided by people who have been educated to a high level, yet their spelling/grammar is horrendous. The rest of the people at work think it's really funny but then a teacher sent home a note to a son of a colleague about his behavious with four spelling mistakes. The mother was not impressed.

What gets me is when the advert voice-over people can't pronounce words properly. My favourite one was the "paintented" technology. PATENTED ONLY HAS ONE "N"!

These people are paid good money to do a simple enough job, and yet they can't even pronounce their words properly. What's going on?

Just checking you were paying attention!!

lol... its my Scottish accent that's responsible for that!! Spelt it the way I say it. Of course I meant definitely!!

.... I hope my boss doesn't see that slip up, I will be out of a job! ?

Bravo are currently running an advert for a show (can't even remember which one, such was my rage) broadcast on Thursday's.

    THURSDAY'S!

I probably wouldn't notice things like that as they wouldn't bother me. As long as i knew what they meant

Believe it or not, there is a belief that worrying too much about spelling restricts creativity. (I didn't buy in to that either)

I have the ability to spot a typo in a page without having read the page. Just scanning it with my eyes spots the error. I have worked with several graphic designers who take great offence that you can spot spelling errors in their work.

That is absolute bobbins. I wouldn't expect anyone to get everything right first time (I sure as hell don't), but there's no excuse for not checking spelling and grammar once you've drafted it.
