Starting ELMM - few questions.

IncaPinca, 14 July, 2009 at 10:17 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 1

Hi All,

Can I say that I have been following this section of the forum for a long time - and some of you are doing so well and I find you inspirational. I weigh *gulp* 13 stone and this is the only time I have admitted it, I lie about my weight constantly - I feel ashamed, even my partner does not know. I want to lose weight for the following reasons - I am starting to show symptoms of PCOS, I want to get married and be a healthy bride, I want to feel like one of the girls not the fat 'friend', and I want to feel sexy again. I want to weigh 9 stone again - so 4 stone to lose. I am now a size 16 and was a size 8 when I first met my OH.

I have joined WW before but I did find it a bind. So my questions are: What motivated you to get started? How did you get started? Do you follow a training routine? Do you follow a diet or eating plan - or just eat less?

Sorry for the many questions - I will pretty much be doing this on my own, so would just like to hear experiences.

Many Thanks

IPx

? Barongreenback is the ELMM poster boy but he's a bit busy atm as he became a daddy yesterday - if that's not inspiration I don't know what is! But MrsM (I think?) is often about too and she has done fantastically on ELMM and lost loads.

If you search for ELMM on here you'll find loads of helpful stuff, but I'll try and give you a quuick run-down of the things that have helped me the most. I've never been overweight really, but I've been a serial dieter and consistently unhappy with my body and the extra 10lbs I thought I could transform my life by losing ?.

    Anyway, my top tips:

    * Get to know the calorie content of things. I don't think calorie-counting everything over the long term is necessarily healthy, but tracking what you eat on weighlossresources or similar is v v helpful in the beginning. Resist the tempation to lie to it!
    * You can never lose weight through willpower. If you are trying to conquer hunger, you will fail.
    * So follow a diet that won't leave you hungry. That broadly means high in protein, especially at breakfast-time, very low in refined carbs, and high in complex carbs, pulses etc. A search online for low GI eating will help you here.
    * Be absolutely religious about eating your five a day - as a bare minimum.
    * If you feel like havving unhealthy food, have it - but acknowledge it for what it is: unhealthy food. It's not going to comfort you or reward you. Other than from a nutritional PoV, food is neutral - it's got no moral value.
    * Learn to identify self-sabotaging and find ways to stop it.
    * A lot of ELMMers have found the book Beyond Chocolate and Paul McK's I Can Make You Thin helpful.
    * Cook from scratch - ready meals are often full of hidden fat and sugar, and they have a one-size-fits-all approach to portions, which can't be good.
    * Re exercise, it's obviously vital to find something you enjoy - for a lot of us this has been running. I exercise five days a week, a mixture of running, gym, walking, pilates and other classes at the gym. I think walking is a fantastic way to get you started.

Phew! Sorry that ended up so long.

Sophie, Thank you so much. I have been following BGB and MrsM.

Great to have some tips - I hadn't really thought about GI so will look into that now. We do a lot of our own cooking - OH makes a mean curry! I know I don't eat my 5 a day and don't drink enough water.

I do find it quite hard to be honest with myself. I do walk a lot a the moment so will need to do that more - I don't mind running and when at the gym I find it hard to go on my own!

    Thanks again
