Starting to lose any confidence I had left...

KEG, 10 October, 2008 at 14:29 Posted on Planning 0 24

After tawlling the shops since Jan for my wedding dress, gave up

1) The style I was looking for is out of fashion! (according to one shop)

2) Didnt really enjoy the experience.

Therefore I am now having one made, fishtail skirt with a corset top, now I am a curvy girl, the style suited me and I felt comforable.

The material I picked, has now been dis-continued (Ref to a previous thread).

Had another meeting with my dressmaker yest, which she said she would have other samples to look at after going to a few fabric fayres.

Turned up with my Mum, she had nothing new to show me really, she was showing me materials that really were nothing like I picked, and just didnt seem to be on the same wave length, she is also deviating away from the orginal sketch she drew, ruching on the skirt, straps/halterneck on the top.

Now the lady has made numerous wedding dresses in our local area, and her reputaion is fantastic, if a bit flakey (H2B tells me most super talented/artistc peeps are!!).

However I have come away with me head battered, getting married in Feb, I have even been searching the net and phoning fabric places to get samples sent out to me of simular stuff I am looking for, just all my confidence is starting to go.

Anyone any advice please?

Not much help really but wanted to offer you a hug ?

Have you thought about looking at sites like "preloved.com" for the dress that you loved that has been discontinued, i bet you'll find it there

Preloved is where I found my dress x

No advice, but didn't want to r&r as it sounds like you're having a hard time ?

One thing I would say is you will get there, don't give up on your dream dress - and who cares if it is out of 'fashion' anyway? I say if you love it and it suits you, go for it! (sounds lovely btw, and I think your H2B is right about 'arty' types)

Oh dear. there is no need for your confidence to be so low babe, more like your energy and enthusiasm?? from wot you said I'm not surprised.. 'In fashion' my arse!

As far as fabrics go, you need to make sure that its a good fabric for working with. The amount of times mums been given fabrics which dont cut well or hang well as they are totally wrong stuff to make a particular style of dress with. So whatever your dressmaker offers you is because she knows the fabric will work well with the pattern (and you can always check that by asking her). I wish I could help you out in terms of fabric samples but have no suggestions. Just ensure that what you like as a fabric will work.

? I had a fishtail-y dress for my Wedding last month so they arent all out of fashion ?! What type of material are you looking for? Is it a two piece? Mine was a dress but it was raw silk and lace with a fishtail at the bottom.

You can kind of see it here:

If its something like that you are looking for I can certainly give you the details etc.

Thanks guys, Your dress is gorgeous by the way (were they the pics of the reception in a barn/beamed ceiling room? and a lovely pic of you being twirled around on the dance floor, if so my H2B and I loved the pics, everybody seemed so happy!)!!

I have picked the material for the fishtail its a doupant/like a shot silk( complete wrong speliing I know), I am going for the coffee olas, mochas, champagnes.

I understand what you are saying about the type of material, its this particular company where the original material I loved is from, the dress makers raves on, but she had no other samples, hence me ringing them today, the shop owner was lovely and said for me to send the sample in and she would try and sound out other simular material types, and they are a bridal fabric shop.

Its just I thought the dressmaker could have done this for us, before we had the meeting yesterday?

Unless your dream dress has big puffy sleeves and a neckline up to your chin then I fail to see how something that suits you can be old fashioned!

Or if its more the fitted with just the bottom flared out you are after, then Maggie Sottero is doing some

Hard to see on the picture, but if it's the same one as I saw on the mannequin at the shop the other day, then it's basically the fishtail version of my dress.

Benjamin Roberts was the orginal designer that I saw the style (love him!)

The shop who said that to me, the assistant was horrendous, she said it was out of fashion, style didnt suit my figure, and I would have to lose a couple of stone for one particular dress, I'm a 12-14 btm, 14-16 top (big boobs, which I hate!), but am wanting to lose 1 stone, not a few!!!

My mum who is brutally honest and straight, couldent believe it when I told her, we went to another shop and the assistant said the complete opposite! The style suits curvy girls, and my mum agreed when she saw it on me.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling, the reason for the separates, is one shop advised me it would fit my figure better, I want the corset quite boned and structured to keep me in.

I think when I see the dressmaker next, I will go armed with pictures and materials samples and see what she says, and hope she doesent deviate away again......

I don't think you will need to have seperates. I am bigger up top than the bottom and have had a normal dress. I am also not wearing a bra and have a lace up corset back. The woman in the first shop sounds like a real b*tch

    Hey Lovely,

Firstly how rude of the assistant - honestly some wedding dress shops, you'd think they were trying to put you off spending ££

I am having a lovely plain satin fishtail dress and b*ll*cks to fashion as it looks fab on me.

The fishtail shape (according to my dressmaker friend) is not that hard to make, and not too expensive as it is not as much fabric as a full on dress. Are there no other dressmakers near you?

My dress is Pronuptia and was very reasonable. Let me know if you want to post a pic but also = can't wait to see how you get on and what your dress is like.

    HERE'S TO THE FISHTAIL GIRLIES!!!

    xx

We stock Ben Roberts and their designs are gorgeous - as is the structure and internal corsets. For that reason I would say that they would be perfect for you if you have big boobs as the support they give is great.

Another option (given the dress design you have described and colours) is to see if these guys have any of the CJ 403 or 406 left (you can't buy Catherine Janes anymore - long story) : http://www.weddingdress-factoryoutlet.co.uk/weddingdress.html

I would say don't allow the dress maker to go ahead with anything until you're absolutely ready - your dress is important, don't compromise too much

Make sure the final sketch is exactly what you want ie no straps if you don't want them and don't let anyone force you into anything you don't like. Also get a copy of the sketch so you can prove that is what you agreed to should she deviate at all.

Thanks KEG, I have actually already contacted this company a couple of weeks ago and for Tommy the cream beetle they will charge me £320 which is great. We are holding off at the moment as we had a few offers on the camper forum we use. THere are a few with beetles there and some of them only charge fuel prices.
