Stationers or crafters

Hi,

Haven't posted here for ages, so hope you don't mind me popping back on to ask a question.

Do any of you have the Cricut machine? I make cards as a hobby, mostly for friends and family and have some birthday money to spend and was thinking of buying one but not sure about it so was wondering if anyone would recommend it.

Thanks

I have one - I have the Cricut Expression.

I soo desperately wanted one and tbh i think I have used it about 3 times!

it is very good and can do some fabby cuts but you have to have room for it to start - basically as well as the machine (the expression anyway) being over 12 inches wide, you also need 12 inches in front AND behind the machine to allow the cutting mat to pass thru (if u use the 12x24 mat you need 24 inches in front and behind)

Also bear in mind the cartridges - they retail at about £29.99 + so can be costly to get a collection up. In summary I do like mine but wish maybe I had got something else with the money..

Have you considered maybe a manual die cutting machine (cuttlebug/bigkick/grandcalibur) and a die collection?

My friend has one and she just can't get used to it. I have a big shot and a large collection of dies, you can get the dies on ebay quite cheaply and sizzix have good offers on their website

The problem with Cricut is that you have to use the cartridges. You cant have the freedom to make up your own designs unless you weld together some of the designs on the cartridges (I believe you need a gypsy for this).

They are ok for a hobby piece but I don't rate them due to the restrictions and expense of cartridges.

I have an industrial cutter and do what I want on that and it's amazing!!

Another option if you want to go the electronic cutter route is the craft robo?

you can create your own designs, cut any true type font.. and buy images too.

The craft robo definitely gets round the problem of cartridges but it doesn't cut anything thicker than paper! I have one at home that I started playing on very early on!

Thanks everyone for the replies, tried to reply earlier on my iPhone but for some reason couldn't reply.

I already have a sizzix, but was wanting to update. I know the cricut cartridges are expensive but I like the idea that you can change the sizes of what you're cutting.

I'll look into the Craft Robo, sounds a bit more my thing.

Nat, can I ask what your industrial cutter is called (I understand if you don't want to say, trade secrets lol)

    Thanks again
