Stationery Hibs / Crafty Types ... Fray Check (kinda O/T!)

Snow Patroller, 30 June, 2009 at 15:01 Posted on Planning 0 5

Ladies .. any tips on using fray stop on satin ribbon? Sometimes I can get it spot on, nice and straight and can trim down when its dried but other times the satin soaks it up dead quick and before I know it I have a wibbly line!

Or any suggestions for something other than Fray Check for satin ribbon?

Its not so bad on Organza, but with the satin I'm wasting a huge amount of time and ribbon just now trying to get it looking tidy!

Thanks in advance!

    Hiya,

Sorry jumping in. But I have used in the past on fabrics, but don't know what if will be OK on satin. But what about clear nail varnish? Silly suggestion but may be worth a try

    Hi Mrs SP,

We would recommend three techniques for ribbons (you will get different effects with different ribbon types and even makes of ribbon):

    1. Fray Check - can work OK on some ribbons

    2. Flame - try a lighter and run the flame quickly along the edge of the ribbon .... watch your fingers !

    3. Try a wood burning tool (or even the end of a hot fix wand) - you can use a ruler to guide the tool across the ribbon to cut it (use a metal ruler or wooden ruler and make sure you lay the ribbon flat on a heat proof surface) - you will then get a very straight line.

    Hope this helps Smiley winking

Laura / Handcrafted ... I'd have never thought of a flame?!! Gotta be honest! Putting fire and ribbon together ..... wwwwwhosh! I think I'd best practise that before I start to do it on half made invitations! I have visions of a puff of smoke and me being left with a thumbnail size piece of card and blackened eyebrows!

Fionats - I did consider nail varnish initially but thougt its just as liquid as the fray check (which is a lot more liquid than I thought it would be tbh ....)

    Right, off to find a lighter ..... : )

    Wish me luck!

(and other suggestions still welcome incase I find my pyromania too hard to control!)

I'm using a flame on the ends of my ribbons at the moment... just do it really quickly though so it doesn't darken the ends and bob's your uncle!
