String Quartet

Just wondering if anyone knows if there will be much difference between a string quartet and a string trio in terms of sound etc? got a quote and the trio is a lot closer to our budget!

    Hey Lucy

There is to the trained ear, but in this particular application I'd say no. String trio will be Violin, Viola and Cello I'm assuming, as opposed to the 2 violins, Viola and Cello of a Quartet. If you're after background music for drinks, you wont notice the difference. If they are going to feature, for example, signing of register etc, as long as they are a good trio you'll be fine. Their repertoire will be slightly different to that of a quartet and it will sound marginally less full. That doesn't mean it will be bad. If it fits your budget then I'd say go with the trio.

There would be a far more marked difference say, between quartet and solo harp, or solo piano - two completely different ball games which I've seen compared and contrasted on here.

    Hope that helps

    Tony

Thank you, thats what i thought but wasnt sure if i was just telling myself that because i liked the price!!

£300 for the trio for up to 2 hours. sounds pretty good to me, but it is the first quote (after negotiation!) that ive had. what do you think?

That's a good price - I usually suggest that a good rule of thumb is starting at £150 per player for a 2 hour minimum...

Just to check - do you want to share a link? Do they have a website? Just to see what they're like?

I Found two: Aurora Strings based in Newcastle who were good and the Aurora String Quartet based in Bristol who, in comparative terms were not quite so accomplished, but nonetheless worth the money at that price - opinions based purely on what I heard on the website...
