Struggling with colour clashes!

hollyhollytree, 10 August, 2015 at 22:02 Posted on Planning 0 18

So it's a little over a year to go until the big day, I know I've got plenty of time but I am finding it difficult to think of colours for flowers, bridesmaid dress, tables etc.

My H2B is in the military and will be wearing his uniform at the wedding ? yummy yum! Only trouble is his uniform is very dark blue (almost black) with a red stripe down the trouser leg and potentially a red sash kinda thing around the waist. Very attractive, very striking... very red.

My problem... I hate red! I like pretty pastel colours. I'm thinking duck egg blue or pale pink for my bridesmaid's dress, creamy pinky roses and gypsophylia in my bouquet and on the tables.

All I can think about is how much these colours are going to clash! I've been looking at pictures from other military weddings and they tend to have navy or red bridesmaids dresses and plain white flowers. Which is so not what I want Smiley sad

Other than have all the photos in black and white, does anyone have any suggestions?? Any other military brides have the same problem? xx

Oooooo lots of men in uniform! Sorry back to colour. I don't think your colour scheme has to match the grooms uniform. I would have what ever colour you want. Except maybe pink. You could always have a neutral colour for your flowers and coloured for the bridesmaids who won't be as near to him on the pic but I honestly wouldn't worry about it. Anyone seeing a man in uniform isn't going to think oh he clashes with the flowers. They are going to think he looks smart.

I would say it doesn't matter. My OH and his groomsmen are all wearing black suits. Granted the groomsmen will have a pocket square in the colour scheme, but other than that, we won't be matching anything to their black suits.

You often get a groom in tartan, and they don't tend to have tartan as the colour scheme.

I think it would look lovely and very smart with the groom in his uniform. The bridesmaids will still be matching! ?

    Hi There,

As a florist myself we actually love to clash colours! If you do it in the right way it can look very striking indeed so do not stress yourself too much ,

Embrace the red be open minded and you may be surprised Smiley smile

Oh I love thinking about colours! I think a duck egg blue (or other pastel blue shade) could look alright with a red. There are many shades of red, depends what it is? I'd probably avoid pink, but that's just me. Could the red be the highlight bit in the overall colour scheme (just teeny tiny bits here and there to tie everything together with the military uniform, but such small amounts people would register the pastel colour as the main thing?) Wish my man wore a uniform!!! Might sound silly, but maybe get paint charts from the diy stores to get ideas of what colours/shades you like with the military red? A good florist would be creative enough to pull in tiny touches of the red colour to a much more pastel shade theme, so things would tie in. Flowers are fantastic at toning bright colours down, as they are not block colours like material and can have multiple shades in just one flower. I'm sure you can get your pastel scheme in and make it work with the military uniform, should look really striking!

I would go with what ever colour you wanted. if you want pastels go for it. Personally I would make a "feature" so to speak of his uniform and it'll make him stand out if that makes sense and I wouldn't try and match any colour to it.

I got through your first paragraph then got completely distracted by men in uniform lol!

Don't try and match - you said you hate red anyway - and you don't want to be doing colours you don't like. If he stands out then that's even better - you won't be able to lose track of him after he hits the bar!! And I love your pastel colours so I'm totally biased! Do the pastels and sod anyone who says it doesn't match.

Men in uniform - can I come??

Thanks for all the replies! It is a bit of a dilemma, I really don't want red in anything!

I love mint and pink and pastels. But does this....

I'm going along the lines of "who cares if it doesn't match" but it is making me cringe a little bit. There will be lots of military guys there in uniform and they may even wear their mess dress in the evening which is ENTIRELY RED! And the naughty H2B has picked 5 groomsmen, none of whom are in the military so we're going to have to fork out for extra suits and then I'll have to worry about them not matching too!! xx

If he wanted a red 3 piece suit with crazy red hat or something then maybe it would be weird. But it's his military uniform. People will understand why he's wearing it so no one is going to think it clashes with the colour scheme.

Personally - I hate red and don't want it anywhere. I think navy is kind of overdone now. So I would stick with pastels.

You're probably just too close to it - step away from colour schemes and look at something else. You might feel better after a couple of days.

Also thanks for the picture of Harry - I've got a proper crush on him so now I'm trying to chance my desktop background to that picture. Sexy ginger in uniform - *swoon*

Made me lol! Very true though.

I'd not worry about it clashing.

Yeah I think navy is overdone now too. I love navy usually and it's one of my favourite colours to wear. But this is my wedding and I want it to be special and different! I'm probably just overthinking it, I bet no one else will even notice but all I'm thinking is that mint and red together is yuck!

Hopefully everyone will just be looking at me in my beautiful dress and him looking yummy in his uniform and will ignore the colours!

I agree with everyone else really. Have whatever makes you happy. I personally love red but if its a colour you hate then I would definitely steer clear from that colour. Like everyone else has said you don't need to match the colour with your OH and it never crossed my mind for it to match. If your OH has groomsmen who are not in the military then even better in my opinion as you can make sure the bridesmaids and groomsmen have something to link them together colour wise and your OH will quite clearly be the groom and special in his outfit the same way you with be the bride and special in your outfit.

I agree with your comment about navy blue, it has been done a lot in the last couple of years but has looked beautiful when ever I have seen it but pastel colours such as pinks and 'blush' have been done a lot recently too! Not sure if it is just because its summer so I am noticing it a lot but it is everywhere at the moment, maybe by the time your wedding is here it won't be so popular. Again nothing wrong with that as it has always looked beautiful when ever I have seen it and if that's the colour you want and like then have that. I like the idea of the duck egg blue and have you tried it with the mint colour? Although both pastels they are less popular than pinks and therefore more unusual. Only my opinion though! What do I know!! haha ?

    Good luck deciding x

I would go with whatever you like best too!

If you are set on matching, the uniform Harry is wearing also has a lot of gold on it. Could you go for a gold colour for your bridesmaids and still have your pastel and white flowers? I think gold/yellow looks brilliant for bridesmaids. Also seen similar done with a pure white & silver wedding - particularly nice in winter!

Your groom will look fab in his uniform. I love a military wedding. Went to one with the groom in the navy the other year.

Gold is a no no but actually I haven't ruled out yellow... hrmm something to think about! I'll be on pinterest looking for yellow things now!

I think it's all going to be decided by the bridesmaid's dress... luckily I only have one bridesmaid so I won't have to deal with any squabbling about who suits which colour. I'm aware that the pastel theme is very popular at the moment which doesn't bother me. I think I'm just put off navy as both my bridesmaid and I are not very adventurous with the colours we wear so I really wanted to do something different and special for the wedding.

Haha I LOVE the tartan comment Smiley tongue tartan themed wedding anyone?

I'm another in the wouldn't worry camp.

I know that you are aware that there will be several guests in uniform, but you would never plan your wedding sheme around what a guest may or may not wear. I certainly didn't worry when I was planning that Aunty Margaret loves Orange and it might clash! So forget them and focus on your wedding party. They will not be in the full red uniform, but just have small red accents. Therefore I don't think you have anything to worry about with your suggested colour scheme. in fact I think your flashes were lovely and the soft colour and flowing fabrics provide a beautiful contrast to the military look, so stick to your guns (if you'll pardon the pun!)

I'm also not a fan of red, and had my colour scheme and flowers all planned out to honour my grandparents. As my granddad was a proud lancastrian I wanted a red rose to honour him. I thought it would look awful so i told the florist that I only wanted on, and i wanted to know it was there, but I wanted it hidden so that it wouldn't ruin the look of the bouquet. She asked me to trust her, and in the end I got this, bright red bang in the middle, and looking gorgeous.
