Stuck for ideas - what birthday gift should I ask for?

RachelHS, 8 October, 2008 at 15:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

I'm stumped. It's my birthday at the end of the month, and my husband wants to know what I'd like for my birthday. He's given me no indication of budget, but I tend to be a cheap date and feel guilty over asking for anything too expensive.

So far I've come up with new boots - I need some brown ones as I've had my old ones for a few years and they're looking a bit shabby. This could be a problem, as I have chubby legs which are likely to get chubbier over the next few months, but I'm hoping a decent pair will last me more than this season...

I also thought maybe some DVDs - there's a few series which I missed on TV but wouldn't mind watching at some point.

He's still asking me what else I want, though. I think maybe he wants several options so he can surprise me...

Clothes are not an option. I will need new maternity stuff in the next few weeks, but I would be most upset if I was given maternity outfits as a birthday present, and there's not much point in being given non-maternity stuff which I'll only be able to wear for a couple of weeks before putting it away until after the baby's born and I lose whatever weight I've put on...

I don't tend to wear much jewellery, either, and the smell of perfume is making me feel sick at the moment so I'm not using any of that...

I read a lot, and I did wonder about an e-book reader, but I thought they'd be too expensive. Plus I had a look at what books are available as eBooks, and it doesn't seem to be as many as I'd hoped. I'd still have to buy most of my books from a normal bookshop, printed on paper, which would kind of defeat the object.

I don't have any other hobbies, apart from reading and watching TV, although I do enjoy cooking when not too knackered (which is frequently, these days...)

How about some nice posh PJ's. I'd say lingerie to normally but I take it that's out to.

A couple of spa or beauty treatments? Hair cut, mani/pedi?

You're me aren't you? It's my birthday at the end of the month and I tend to be low maintenance but i'm changing the rules this year. MrSun is getting me a bracelet, my sis is getting me vouchers to have my nails done (either hands or feet, haven't decided yet), and my mum and dad are getting me some PJ's I think. H has also said he'll get me a coat if I can find one I like.

I'd quite like a chunky knit cardi if I can find one I like and some nice shampoo/conditioner, some vouchers for the hair salon I use and a leather handbag. I don't know who's going to buy them though ? I hope that lot has given you some ideas.

Oh and try Duo Boots for boots, your H could probably order them if you take your measurements. If you want to wear them whilst pregnant then i'd suggest something flat.

Gosh, this is my problem! It's my birthday on Sunday. H has been asking me for ages as to what I'd like. I've now asked for a little camera, just something small enough to fit in my handbag. As to what else I want, gawd knows!

But, what about perfume, handbag, dressing gown? Do you have an ipod? What about something like a DS? Mine is great, as I'm a train commuter.

Thanks, all. There's a few good ideas here.

I'm not sure if spa treatments are appropriate when pregnant - the last time I went to a spa, I noticed that there were very few treatments marked as 'suitable during pregnancy' which kind of implies that the rest aren't...

I have an Ipod already, and H has a DS which he says I'm welcome to borrow but so far I haven't been interested enough to pick it up.

Some Spa's do expectant mothers (or whatever the term is) spa days etc. I know Calcot Manor does but I'm not sure if that's anywhere near where you are.

You sound like me, its my birthday next month and H has been asking me for weeks what I would like for my birthday and I have absolutely no idea. He normally buys me perfume and a nice piece of jewellry but I would love something different. I will be watching this thread with interest to see if I can get any ideas from it.

What about vouchers for a local salon? Decleor do a lovely pregnancy massage that lasts about an hour.
