Stupid question re using a library

Bowski, 12 September, 2008 at 16:03 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

I've not used a library for years and was just wondering if I wanted a book that wasn't stocked in my local one can they order it in? Even if it's not one that would normally be stocked?

I'm looking for a book on drama activities for 5-8 year olds and won't be able to afford to buy one but if I can find one should I be able to order it from the library?

Sorry for being so dumb on this!

In my experience if the local authority as a book in stock it will transfer it between library branches and you can order it. The same happens between library sites at college/uni.

At our library I think you can only order/reserve a book if its in circulation somewhere within the borough or affiliated libraries - I don't think they'll actually buy it in for you if it's not on their reading list.. Is it a particular book you're looking for, because if not drama activities for children should be reasonably available.

I don't think they can buy it for you on request if this is what you mean? It has been years and years since I was last in a library(!) so I'm probably outdated, but my local library and those I used then had a computer linked to central stocks, which listed EVERY book the libraries within that council holds. Might it be worth looking at such a list and seeing if another library within your county has the book. If so, you can request an inter-library loan and it's delivered to your local library.

I am prepared to be quite wrong on this, as I said it has been a verrrrry long time since I last visited a library.

I've just managed to find an online list of all books, how good is the internet?!

They appear to have no drama activity books at all but do have a couple of plays for children so I'll have to join and order the plays and I've managed to find a book of 101 drama games for kids on amazon sellers for under £10 so I ordered it as it'll be handy to have if I keep agreeing to run drama clubs!

The internet IS brilliant isn't it.. I constantly wonder what it would be like if we all had to go back to the dark ages (pre-90's ?!).

I don't think I could do without my Tesco's online delivery.

Good luck with your drama club.
