Stupid Stupid Thing to Do

Irish Eyes, 16 February, 2009 at 09:51 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 40

Had friends for tea last night, had one or two glasses of vino, when they had left and hubby in bed, I fired up fleabay and bid on a Piano – I am currently the leading bidder, and in the cold light of day I so don’t want a Piano and am dreading telling my OH if we win. I cannot log on to fleabay at work so can’t see what is happening……what a nightmare…

Please tell me your fleaby nightmares so that I feel a bit better.

Fimble, I'm glad I made you laugh at least!!

I don't have the no. with me, but it was a Arthur Allison and co upright piano in Sheffield.

I was sat at work when I suddenly remembered what I had done. Madness complete madness, wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't such a big thing! I am banning myself from red wine forthwith - I always do something stupid.

OK, IE I've just checked fleabay

Bidder 3 is currently winning, with a bid of £11.50 (bargainous!!!!). The bid was made at 21:24 so I guess that's you.

The piano is gorgeous.....I'd so want it, just can't get it to denmark!

Edited to add that I've just realised that bid 4 was at 00:26 this morning so if that was you, your in luck.....your not getting a piano. But you may still have to own up unless you can delete all the bid emails prior to your H seeing them!

I highly doubt you'll get that for £11.50, if you do it's a bloody bargain. At least you didn't put in a maximum bid of hundreds....................did you? ?

Please would someone tell me when it is due to end? I'm bricking it, not so long ago I completely embarrased my hubby when I had too much vino, so am dreading having to tell him.

Not my ebay nightmare but a friends. Her and her H wanted a campervan. She bid on 3 of them to hopefully get one. She managed to turn off the maximum bid bit and set it to auto. So she was winning all three and couldn't work out how to turn of the auto bid! She emailed ebay and they did (after a nail biting hour) manage to sort it out. She did get her camplervan - and just the one!

Hope you manage to sort this out!

My H is terrible with ebay. He loves it and uses it for pretty much anything he wants to buy - usually fine and gets a good price. However, he often uses auction snipers to get in at the last second with his bid and has - on more than one occassion - selected an option 'search for similar' or something. What that means it does is searches AND bids up to the maximum amount you've put in for the first item. The first time this happened and we ended up with 4 hard drives, I forgave him, clearly it was an innocent mistake. I wasn't so impressed this Christmas when my main present was 3 Tiffany necklaces all wrapped up and he told me to 'choose the one I liked best because he'd bought all 3 by accident'! It spoiled the surprise a bit, tbh - no way can he really afford 3 Tiffany necklaces even if they were off ebay (and I'd much prefer it if they'd come from the shop, too!). I'm currently wearing my favourite necklace and the other 2 are waiting by the side of the computer to be relisted. Grrr!

Not a fleabay one, but after a very boozy meal with friends, H & I sat down to watch Jonathon Ross who had the Osmonds on plugging their reunion tour, I went online and booked tickets. I had the same awful realisation halfway through the next day, I had to fess up and tell H and my friend as I had bought them tickets for the following Saturday. We all went and actually had quite a good time even though I only recognised 2 of the songs! No idea why I thought it was a good idea as I'd never been a fan and am too young to remember them first time round.

    Hope you get out bid!

The shock hit me like a thunderbolt. I was looking for a keyboard, a nice little keyboard - why on earth I thought a piano would be a good alternative I have no idea. I need to list things to clear some space, not buy things I have no room for. I am in so much trouble. I have the worlds most sensible man as a husband, he is not going to find this amusing, especially when we have to go pick it up.

If the worst comes to the worst and you do win it, couldn't you just pay for it and let the seller keep it? Then they could sell it again. I know its a waste of £20 but better than being lumbered with it when you don't want it...

I think you can cancel your bid under some circumstances...

You can just retract your bid... If you go onto the help section of ebay and search 'retract bid' all you need to do is put in the item number and why you want to retract the bid and ebay will cancel the bid for you.

Saves you having to a buy a piano you dont want and lets someone else buy it.

Ebay could bring in an option to "Cancel bid as I was tiddled" option - with perhaps a £1.00 fine to be donated to charity!!

A piano though! I bet your face was a picture!!

Am I the only one thinking 'I can't believe you can buy an upright piano for 11.50'? Is there no reserve?

(Not that I don't sympathise with your predicament, Irish Eyes.)

You can retract bids on ebay. You will be able to do it at home tonight before the auction ends.

KJX that made me smile. Happily donate the 20 quid if I don't get found out.......happy to pay and not collect the piano, just hoping the seller isn't just trying to get rid of it for space, they will feel very hacked off with me.

Your husband will already have had emails notifying him that 'his' bid has been accepted and thet 'he' is the highest bidder. If you retract your bid it will show on his account and that's not a good thing. Personally I'd come clean now, tell him what you've done and THEN retract the bid or sit it out and hope for the best, depending on what he wants. As funny as this situation is I'd be really hacked off if I was selling someting on fleabay and some drunk started messing me around. I'd be equally as annoyed if Mr G started doing things like this using my account.

It's up to £21 and bidder 2 is winning so I think you're ok! Would love to see your H's face when he checks his emails though?
