Sun holidays

SakuraYuna, 2 January, 2015 at 20:38 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

Hi. Just wondering if anyone on here is planning a Sun holiday? Vouchers start tomorrow. I've only been on one before, thinking about going this this year for a cheap holiday to help with saving money for wedding.

Anyone else? If so where are you hoping to go?

We are! We'd planned a mini holiday to Bournemouth way in June and this will save us a fortune on the accommodation :-)

I went on my first ever Sun holiday a couple years ago when OH was unemployed for a cheap holiday. In truth it did end up costing more than expected (you have to pay the £9.50 or £15 per person for minimum 4 people even if there are less than 4 people going) and obviously travel costs, eating out costs etc do all add up a bit. Also service costs and entertainment passes.... so it is worth adding the costs up carefully first. I think it was still cheaper than not getting the holiday through the Sun.

We went to the Isle of Wight (I'd never been before) and had a lovely time. The accommodation was quite run down and basic, but we tried to just see it as a bed for the night, the holiday park was nice, and we enjoyed our time there.

We are considering trying out a holiday in Italy through them! Although I guess the main costs there would be flights so would have to be careful with that...

We have done a Sun holiday every year for the past 8 years, gone to Edinburgh, Devon, Norfolk, Wales. All over basically.

We do intend to do it again this year as it really does work out a cheap break. All in all with the Service Charge costs and entertainment passes its has never cost us more than £100 for a weeks break. We quite often end up getting upgraded for free on the caravans and so have stayed in some really nice places.

I think its worth doing, even if only as a mini break. For us though, these are the only holidays we have ever been on together as a couple.

Are there any sites in particular you really recommend? Especially for couples without kids?

I can't remember the exact names of where I stayed.

But I stayed at one in Hunstanton, Norfolk which was lovely.

The one in Edinburgh was really nice too, only 30 mins from Edinburgh itself. (We have been there twice now).

The Devon which was probably one of the best was near the Zoo. It was right on the coast so in the evenings we could walk the cliffs and hear the sea.

The Wales one was probably the least enjoyable, it was North Wales near Rhyl. Though I think that was more location than the caravan sites fault.

We are a couple with no Kids. And even though the parks are geared mostly for Kids we never found it an issue, we just used the caravan as a home for the week.

I have done a few over the years but we always upgrade to a better caravan and pay the extra as it is really worth it. Still works out cheaper than booking direct most of the time. So of the luxary ones are bloody amazing inside!

Just watch out for hidden extras like one year we had to pay £5 a day for gas!

We went on one a few years back and had no trouble at all - we went to South Wales and it was lovely, but impossible to access without a car so be aware that some of the camps may be rather off the beaten track.

Unfortunately for us, they tend to be during school terms so that makes them impossible for us now that the law has changed.

I'm amazed this is such a big thing! In the North - more Liverpool but Manchester too - you just don't buy The Sun. Or, I don't know anyone who would anyway!

I guess they still make a profit from it though? It would be frowned upon here either way, I think.

Sorry - I realise now that my original post looks like I'm a) judging people for taking the deals and/or b) trying to start an argument about the Sun's ethics...I'm really not Smiley smile

Lots of people don't buy the Sun because of the Hillsborough thing.

Some local papers also do these deals though so if you are offended by the Sun, there are other options.

Yeah...that's why we don't buy it. Good to know there are alternatives for bargain holidays out there, though Smiley smile

My colleague is from Liverpool and has been known to buy the sun (for the crossword). I never buy it normally as I don't buy newspapers anyway but if I did I still wouldn't buy the sun, but am only buying for collecting vouchers! I'm sure lots of people do the same thing.

We can drive to wherever we go. Not sure where we'll pick yet...

I booked ours yesterday, we've got a 4 night break in Weymouth in the middle of June
We went to the same place last year but we didn't do it as a Sun holiday, so this time we've saved about £120 Smiley smile

Ooh which camp? I tried to book parkdean warmwell for easter week but no joy Smiley sad I'm going to Manorbier country park in South Wales . Got good TripAdvisor reviews but worried there might not be much going on there. Should be nice anyway quiet can be good... Also despite only 2 of us going a good save. Holiday costing £100 but would normally be over 200 for easter week (I think. Can't remember exact saving)
