Surprised how much honeymoons cost

moonpie1985, 26 June, 2011 at 22:38 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 6

Went to the travel agent to talk about Honeymoons for the 1st time this weekend.

We want to go away for 2 weeks and do 1 week in one place and then 1 week in another.

To stay somewhere quite basic like a 3* hotel in America, we were getting quotes of £4000+ for the 2 week trip.

We are not beechy people, and feel that a honeymoon should be something out of the ordinary and would like a bit of luxury, so hoping for more like 4 or 5 * accomodation.

Does anyone have any reccomendations of companies, or are we just not being very realistic of how much these things cost?

I'm not going to lie, honeymoons can be expensive, but they don't have to be. If you're going to the US, you'll also need to factor in the cost of flights, which are probably at least £1000 of that cost alone. And then you'll have the secondary flight added on if you go from one place to another. So you have maybe £1500 in flights, which leaves £2500 for accommodation. You end up with close to £200 a night. Pretty expensive for a 3* but not if you're going somewhere like NY or the cities in California.

I did go for a beachy honeymoon with Turquoise Holidays, in the Seychelles, and I know it's pretty hard to find a honeymoon that isn't more of this type. Have you thought perhaps of Asia? Places like Bali and Thailand can have really good culture in the cities and better priced hotels. I've seen many couples go to these places on £4000 or less.

Otherwise, I'd recommend booking a US trip yourself. It's easy to do as all the websites are in English and currency conversion is pretty simple. That should give you a better idea of what to expect from your tour operator.

I would recommend Trailfinders. We're staying in San Francisco, Los Angeles & Las Vegas with a converible hire car to travel between the places. We're away for twelve nights in total and it came in a just under three thousand. We tried to do it as luxurious as possible, with 4* star in SF, 3* in LA and we went all out in Vegas for 5*. I shopped around for ages and Trailfinders had the best prices. Once we'd decided on trialfinders, i literally phoned them every day tweaking the itinary, making changes and seeing how it affected the quote until we got excatly what we wanted for what we could afford (only just lol)

    Hi

I have started looking into honeymoons but can't find any dates for 1st July 2012. Most companies are still only showing up to April. It is something that we want to sort out as soon as possible but finding it almost impossible. Where did you look Moonpie?

We want to go to America too.

    Thanks

    Helen

    Hi Heleng78

We've had this same problem too, however Trailfinders and Turquoise holidays (you would have to check if they go to the US) are able to give quotes for June/July 2012. Most decent companies will often to give you quotes based on 2011 prices if they can be bothered!

    Hi

I booked our honeymoon last month going to Mexico in July 2012. Most high street travel agents have their July 2012 prices out, Thomsons, First Choice, Thomas Cook, I know that Virgin do to.

    Hope that helps

    Hi Moonpie

You can definitely do the states for less than they are quoting.

My last trip there wasn't my honeymoon but we had 8 weeks driving from one Miami to LA, we stayed in some very cheap places as we were on a tight budget (not really honeymoon material!) but we had a lovely convertible for the entire time. We did the entire 8 weeks (Motels, food & Car) for about 6,000. Our flights were round the world flights but you can get to the US for 300 return pp.

Try Kuoni, they do Luxury and Honeymoons and I have been pleasantly surprised by the price.
