Surrey and surrounding area people - help please!

Canary, 16 March, 2012 at 16:45 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Carrying on from my post on the good/bad thread, I have now found out that I've been unsuccessful in all the graduate scheme's I applied for. The bonus of this means that it frees OH and I up to move closer to his work HQ which is in Staines.

OH hates change and doesn't deal with it well so I'm trying to scout out the local area without reminding him of it too much.

I am guessing we won't move till I have a job so my questions to you are:

Where are nice but cheap places to live within an easy commute of Staines?

What do you reckon would be the best areas for me to look for work? (For example, I know that in Essex, Southend is a long way from me and probably not commutable!)

Any other recommendations that you have? I'm really unsure of our time-scales etc at the moment but want to get an idea of the area we're likely to be moving into.

Plus anyone in the area need a new drinking buddy ??

Pretty close to me.. In fact I was in Staines on Sunday!

Staines town centre isn't the nicest although some of the areas near the river are nice. I would suggest Shepperton / Laleham / Sunbury / Hampton (a little further and more expensive but really lovely) or you can look at Chobham / Ascot / Windsor. I would avoid Egham / Wraysbury as it is right on the flight path..

Feel free to drop me an email if you want more info ?

I work in Feltham which is near Staines so know some of the area (ish). Staines is quite a good area to commute to as it is near the M25 so easily commutable from lots of areas. Are you looking to buy or rent? I live in Camberley, Hampshire/Surrey boarder and can get to Staines in 30 minutes (on the M3 then M25) although obviously high in petrol costs but the house prices are really cheap around here. Also look at Bracknell (although not a lovely area there are some nice-ish areas and its cheap) Farnborough, Bagshot, Windlesham etc as these are areas just off the M3/A30 which are easily commutable to Staines.

Ascot/Windsor would be lovely areas but expensive.

If you are looking nearer then I second Shepperton/Laleham NOT Feltham, Staines itself or Hounslow etc - look further out if anything!

Chobham is also nice, Addlestone etc.

Pretty close to me! ? We are in Ruislip, OH has new job in Sunbury, I'm waiting to hear back about a job in Fleet. Both commutable from where we are now but after wedding we do want to move out to the corridor area from M25 to reading between m3 and m4 - covering bracknell, wokingham, sandhurst etc. Have discovered can get a good amount for money in that direction.

Always remember especially with london, it's easier to commute outwards than inwards.

Bracknell's quite an industrial area which means lots of HQ businesses based there (stripeyrache is there if you want specifics)

ETA - just looked on a map and recalled Shepperton came up with some decent properties well priced as well. Walton on thames is stunning but pretty expensive (few celebs round here and max clifford etc)

Nutella - I grew up in Harrow went to school in Pinner before moving to London then Surrey! ?

I didn't think about further down the M3 - A30 - But Bagshot is ok - we have a few friends who live there! Chertsey / Thorpe maybe? wokingham is ok but a pig to get in and out of... Or you could go further Guildford way - woking isnt great but it has some nice surrounding areas...

    Hey

I used to live in Feltham when I lived with my parents and now live in Addlestone with OH.

Cheapest places in the area are Feltham/Bedfont, Ashford, Sunbury and Staines itself.

Richmond/Shepperton/Twickenham are lovely areas but more expensive. Chertsey/addlestone are close by and close to M25/M3 and cheaper than these places and just as nice.

    xx

Unfortunately round here nice and cheap very rarely go together! staines itself is pretty reasonable in terms of renting and buying though some areas are obviously better than others.

as nutella mentioned i'm in bracknell. you get a lot of property for your money here both for rental and purchased, its the main reason we bought here. some parts are better than others, and there are plenty of parts of the town which really don't deserve the reputation that preceeds them! we're on the waterloo line here and its direct to staines in about 25 mins. bracknell itself is also home to some big companies such as dell, hp, waitrose, 3m, bmw, panasonic, fujitsu etc so generally employment is pretty high and easy to come by.

you're also between the m4 and m3 here so good road links if you drive.

plenty of good leisure round here, you've got swinley forest and windsor great park close by. good shopping in reading. london is about an hour on the train direct to waterloo or you can drive it in about the same time too.

give us a shout if you have any other questions! hope that helps Smiley smile

I used to be a regular visitor to Chertsey when I was seeing a chap there, it's not too bad and right off the m25

Thanks all, this is really helpful.

I know it's a bit further out but is Reading still commutable to Staines? I will definitely check out all the areas that you guys have mentioned, at the moment I have just been drawing a large area on rightmove but this enables me to narrow it down a bit.

We'll be renting at first unless we suddenly receive a large sum of money for a deposit!

All quite exciting, I started applying for jobs in the area at the weekend. Just need to tie OH down to an estimate of when we want to move.
