Survey: Cats' whiskers

Peaches, 5 August, 2009 at 16:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

I was stroking my 8.5 year old cat this morning and the length of his whiskers struck me as being far wider than his body. So I had a look at Tex's whiskers, and they are not only far shorter (about the width of his body - just), but also much finer. He is 2.5 years old now (gosh, he was only 10 months when we got him last January - where has the time gone?!)

Is it an age thing where whiskers not only get longer, but thicker too?

What are your cats' whiskers like, and how old are they??

Has you 8.5 years cat ever been fatter than it is now? that could explain it, as I think whiskers are normally the width of the body and it helps them to judge whether they can get through certain spaces.

My boys, but more so Ronnie five bellies, are huge and so are their whiskers.

I could be very wrong though.

Guinness has quite fine whiskers and he is about 2 1/2 years old, he is quite muscular and lithe (I'm sure theres a bit of siamese in him somewhere!)

Pinot, is the largest cat but not the widest IYSWIM, and she is 6 years old, I don't really know about her whiskers as she is all black I never really see them!

Pernod, is smaller than Pinot but rounder also 6 years old, she has white long thick whiskers against black fur that makes then stand out more I reckon.

Not that I know of. He was tiny and very skinny when we got him as a rescue cat who had been badly abused. His tail had been chopped off, and it took us 3 years to get him to come to us. Even now he has the odd moment when he looks really, really scared. He is still tiny, but not skinny, and definitely not fat. It just struck me this morning how thick and long his whiskers are - as if they'd grown overnight!

When my aunt's cat got very old, she started to go blind and her whiskers got a lot longer and thicker then - apparently they were used to help her see.

? 8 1/2 isn't very old .. although I guess in human years, he'd be 76 1/2, which is getting up there. I know men get long nasal hair and ear hair as they age. Probably the same thing.

Is my baby no longer a baby?? [:'(]

My puss-cat's whiskers are a little bit wider than her body, dark and quite thick at the base, changing to white and finer further out. Can't say I have been aware of them changing with age though, and she's 18 now!

I've been wanting to check my boy's whiskers since I first saw this post, but he hasn't moved off the sofa since about midday ?. It's getting on for dinner time though, he might rouse himself soon and I'll be able to measure them

My Pud's whiskers are long, most of them are thick a few thin ones.
    She's 6 and a voluptuous girl.

The ILs had a cat that got to 26, he had normal whiskers.

Damn my sleeping cat, I wanna check!

Id probably say they were the width of his body, although most of him is made up of fluff!
