Sussex/Surrey photographer recommendations

amihohu, 8 August, 2012 at 13:43 Posted on Planning 0 28

Afternoon Ladies (and any men!)

Does anyone have any recommendations for a photographer they have used in the Sussex/Surrey area? Thanks!

Most photographers will travel so you don't need to restrict your search to just those areas. You could also look into those recommended by your venue.

The most important things are your budget, and what style of photography you are after?

What sort of photography and what kind of budget?

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend my tog, Andy Billington: https://andrewbillingtonphotography.com/ he does travel too included in the price. His price has increased quite a lot since we booked him but I'd still pay the new price as I was so happy with our pics.

    ETA: Ha, kirstabubble, great minds...!

Looking forward to seeing the replies, we too are seeking a photographer in the Sussex area, but are so far drawing a blank.

Ours are based in Sussex: https://jandaphotography.com/

Our wedding is in a couple of weeks, so hopefully the photos will turn out well. I only have good things to say about them so far though - really professional and friendly!

My friend had Nicki Feltham and the photos were beautiful - she has a fb page and website is: http://www.nfelthamphotography.co.uk/

She's based in West Sussex, but I am sure she will travel.

Lot's of good photographers travel to shoot weddings these days & quite often they won't charge any/much extra for traveling (due to the market at the moment) so it is possible to book a great photographer from another area & save money?

We love photographing in new venues as we feel it keeps us on our toes & provides new inspiration. We have relatives in Hove, so please feel free to take a look at our site, www.arjenkinsphotography.co.uk

    I'm in Brighton - and a photographer.

I'm also getting married in 2014 and I really feel for Pavone as I'm in a similar situation.

When you're a wedding photographer, how do you find someone up to your standards?

    I can completely empathise!

Trying to look at photos from a neutral "bride-to-be" stand point is incredibly difficult. I've always got my photographer head on, which is both a blessing and a curse!

If ever you want to see some start to finish stuff, let me know.

Not canvassing either, but most togs aren't too forthcoming in showing full examples of their work and it'll help you see it from another pro's eyes.

We're finding it hard to see start to finish stuff. I saw some really well regarded togs online but scratch the surface and the paint starts to peel off (so to speak).

Wow thanks for all the replies everyone. Yeah I guess I hadn't really thought about looking further out. I've had a couple of recommendations from friends, but honestly, haven't liked the photos much. I do a bit of amature photography and am a professional 3d artist work wise, so I guess I probably am being a bit more picky maybe!

You probably understand angles, use of colour better than most. It's why it's proving so hard. Lots of people out there calling themselves pros right now flooding the market with cheap websites and drowning out the true talent. ?

Yeah I think that's the thing, a lot of portfolios I've seen, I just think, I can take photos at least as good as that if not better, because I wouldn't have blimming cut off her bouquet half way, or gotten that random dudes foot in it, and I would never call myself a pro, so if I'm going to pay someone a lot of money, they've gotta do a much better jo than I would!

I'm a video games environment artist, so 3ds Max for models etc and Photoshop for textures, with a bit of actual 'real' art drawing and photography thrown in there sometimes too Smiley smile

I would strongly recommend Karen and Doug howell - I thought they were amazing. Love natural shots. They were so unobtrusive as well on the day. fantastic.

You can check out their blog. Brilliant photographers and lovely, lovely people. Plus you are getting two photographers!

    Thanks Chris Smiley smile

We'll be looking to book early next year probably, so will keep that in mind.

Aside from venues no one seems to be replying to us (probably understandable given the fact it's a 2015 wedding) so we're giving the planning a rest for the time being.

Out of interest, when looking for photographers, do you let them know your profession to begin with? We haven't until now and some of the things we're told or have had said to us by unknowing photographers at wedding fayres (obviously eager to sell sell sell) are hilarious ?

I've shot a number of weddings where the groom was really into photography (but not professional) and also a couple of weddings where one of the parents of the couple has been/is a wedding & commercial photographer, no they 'forgot' to mention it when they booked, just dropped it on me at the start of the day? So I did spend quite a bit of time feeling watched....but it all went OK & on both occasions they came up to me when I was leaving & said what a great job they thought I'd done (which was nice). i also know what you mean about photographers schpiel - I think quite a few of them should spend a bit more time taking photos & getting some 'real' experience before they start selling their product...

I'm not looking yet but would only disclose that on meeting them. TBH it shouldn't make a difference and I find it quite complimentary.

I get bookings from a lot of people in the art and design business so photography falls under that wing. It should be easier in truth because they understand what can and can't be achieved on the day.

    Hi Uhohima,

You should look through the real wedding section on hitched.co.uk to see what style of photography you like.

    https://www.hitched.co.uk/real-weddings/

All of the photographers are credited on there, so you can contact them straight away if you see anyone that inspires you.

My photographer was outstanding and is prepared to travel for weddings. My wedding was just outside of Surrey, in Hampshire.

This is my real wedding - https://www.hitched.co.uk/real-weddings/francesca-barry_157/

    Good luck with your search!

    Fran x

It's something we only considered after encountering a few photographers at wedding fairs, who of course didn't know what we did for a living. As a result we were fed complete lies and nonsense like there was no tomorrow. Neither of us are very confrontational, so just let them say whatever it was they wanted to say rather than correcting/interrupting. It was a bit of an education for us as you rarely get to experience the industry from the other perspective.

It just got us thinking, that's all. It would never have been something that we would have planned to hide previously- as you say the initial instinct would be to disclose for the reasons you mentioned, but now we're considering keeping it under our hats for a bit longer than we might have done before. Just to see who we're dealing with ?

That could be your yardstick then. Don't disclose it, see if they are honest with you.

If they are and you like their work then they are probably the ones to go for.

I rarely ask what people do for a living unless it's part of an informal chat.
