SW & exercise??

claireac, 2 April, 2009 at 14:55 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 6

Hi,

I've now lost 1.5stone on Slimming World and going to the gym. My oh joined a different gym and it's a lot better than the one I was going to, so when my membership expired I joined oh's gym. New gym is great! State of the art, just been re-fitted and lots of induction and progress appointments.

What I'm wondering though is how my SW fits in with going to the gym?? I only ask because one of the instructors (who is very well respected, in his 60's and competes in body building competitions) said that diet programs such as SW (and WW) aren't aimed at people like me who are going to the gym 3 times a week plus other bits. He said fine if I have a sedentary job (I do) and didn't exercise, but they find time and again that the likes of SW/WW aren't appropriate.

What do you think?? Does anyone know?? Coincidentally, I haven't lost anything the last fortnight - I've gained 1/2lb.

Thanks

Don't know anything about SW but with WW they encourage exercise and you earn bonus points. This means that you can have extra food for the exercise you have done. I am currently waiting for the delievery of my points counter from WW.

You may have gained weight from gaining muscle mass which weighs more than fat. What may be an idea is to measure yourself as you may be losing inches but not pounds.

I think what the instructor is misinformed. All diet programmes I know encourage exercise alongside healthy eating.

Sounds like a load of boll***s to me. Last time I did SW I was going to the gym 2-3 times a week and swimming, too, and I lost three and a half stone. The exercise was great - helepd me tone up flabby bits and muscles. The gym instructer knew I was doing SW and he positively encouraged me, saying the plan and exercise made for a great combination.

I can't think why anyone would say eating sensibly and exercising weren't good together.

The only thing I can think of is that he thinks things like SW & WW are too restrictive - in which case he obviously doesn't know the plans. Maybe he's thinking more along the lines of Cambridge and that type of thing.

I have a follow up weight induction with him on Tuesday, so will quiz him then!!

The only reason I can think of why you aren't losing now, is needing more food when exercising. Maybe you need to eat a bit extra?

SW also encourages people to exercise - they have a programme called body magic which you build up to 30 min exercise 5 times a week.

Are you supposed to get awards for Bronze, Silver and Gold levels...like you do with the weight loss?

    Yes.

Bronze is equal to 45 minutes per week spread over at least 3 sessions maintained for four weeks. Silver is 6 x 15 min or 3 x 30 min per week maintained for four weeks. Gold is 10 x 15 minutes or 5 x 30 minutes per week maintained for 8 weeks. Platinum is when active living is a lifestyle.
