Swearing on forums.

bobbly, 20 April, 2008 at 18:22 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 28

I've just had to explain the C word to my 9 year old son.

I was looking at a thread, went to make a cup of tea, leaving the screen on and it happened to be on a page where someone had typed the C word. My son was going to log onto his computer game, and spotted it and asked what it was...

I didn't realise I'd have to be careful on what was showing on the screen when reading Hitched.

There has been swearing on hitched since everyone learned how to swear, although not so much since Darren got annoyed with us all.

Hitched is an adult forum. It's up to you to make sure your son is policed, not us. <shrug>

I'm quite surprised that a 9-year-old hadn't encountered the term before tbh. <shrug>

WEES. Although I'm not a fan of the c word, I swear a fair bit on here and don't really see it as a problem. Moral of the story is to close it down when you're not using it I guess.

I'm not blaming anyone - just mad at myself that I left the forum window open!

I do monitor my child's internet usage - If you had a window into my world, you would see that the computer is about 2 steps away from my kitchen sink.

I was berating myself at leaving me in an awkward position - sorry!

Your son would like my urban dictionary game.

    And what Mrs Winkle said.

Are you asking us not to swear?

We don't swear at all at home, so he has heard it, it would either have been at school or on an unsuitable tv programme.

Suppose he'd been looking at the recent thread in which people recounted their experiences of rape in a mutually supportive fashion?

Much harder to deal with, I'd have thought, than the odd bit of swearing - but surely no-one would suggest these threads be banned in case their nine-year-old reads them accidentally?

Not at all! - It was my silly mistake. I have never said that!

It was interesting trying to explain what the C word meant though!

I'm surprised that he's not heard it in teh playground already.

<thinks about editing out the c word in the acne thread, but thinks better of it>

He may have, but probably wasn't explained the meaning.

Please don't edit anything - I was merely posting about having to explain to a 9 year oldwhat the C word meant - I expect it would have read better with an exclamation mark at the end!

I love it when Rowan (three) shrieks "GO AWAY!" at me when she's in a particularly bad mood - because her tone suggests that she's so clearly thinking something much stronger, but doesn't have the right vocabulary.

    Yet. ?

FWIW i don't find cunt offensive, its lost its potency as a swear word, but i wouldn't say it in front of a child.

i know you aren't blaming us bobbly, how did you explain it?

    Aww bless her!

There was quite an interesting discussion on another forum yesterday about whether the word "bloody" is still considered as a swear word, of if it has now been so incorporated into everday life, that it is not considered swearing any more.

I'm 'allowed' to say bloody in front of my dad so I think it's probably not a swear word ?

I would be mortified if my daughter heard the word cunt. SHe is 8.

I teach 9 -10 year old (and I know it's different everywhere) they do know swear words but i'm pretty confident that 90% of them I have taught would not know or heard the name cunt.

    Other swear words - yes.

I said that it is probably one of the worst swear words to use, (in my opionion - I didn't say that bit though!) and it was originally a nasty word for lady's bits that people now use in a viscious(sp) way to be nasty to other people.

LOL - the reason for the debate was that Donna in Dr Who said something like "I bloody love you" to the doctor, and people were discussing whether it was now considered a non-swear word as it has been said in Dr Who twice now!

Personally I still consider it a swear word,(but a mild one) but then I'm old fashioned like that!

WSS. For me it hasn't lost it's potency at all, it's incredibly offensive. Am not a prude, I say fuck a lot on here and IRL, just not the c word.
