Table dressing - DIY vs hiring?

MrsMacfarlane, 23 October, 2012 at 14:43 Posted on Planning 0 16

Hi ladies (and gents),

I'm getting married in 2014 in Cheshire and I'm having issues figuring out what to do about the table dressing.

I have looked into hiring everything but the prices seem extortionate and yet if I buy my own, I can't seem to find any company willing to just dress my tables with the items I provide. I don't want to have to be running around on the morning dressing tables, due to increase of Friday weddings I can't guarantee I'd be able to go to the venue the night before and I don't want my family to have to be there so early to do it either because they're my guests.

Has anyone else had the problem of struggling to find someone just to dress the tables with your own items?

Would you pay someone to just put your decorations out and if you are how much are they charging?

Thanks in anticipation!

Don't they dress it for you then? I've never come across a hotel wedding where you have to set up the room yourself.

They will put out the basic stuff but I wasn't too sure if they were going to start scattering crystals and whatnot everywhere for me!

This is what I was thinking, do they not have a wedding corodinater? I'm just handing over the boxes, cake everything to my new best friend corodinater (my wedding cordinator) and they will set it all up, am just asking my mum to pop in and make sure it's all ok (she is desperate for something to do!)

We gave our venue a box of anything extra we wanted put out (e.g. placecards etc) and they sorted it. Check with them, I'd be very surprised if you had to do it yourself, that's what you're paying them for.

Well that would solve the problem, I think because we're so far in advance of our wedding we haven't had much chat with our wedding co-ordinator because its too early!

We're also a 2014 wedding. Like you, we haven't been able to chat much with our coordinator as it's a little way off yet. But we have been assured that everything for the tables will be set up by them.

I'll be doing a trial run of my tables at home, take a photo, put everything for each table into it's own box, then send it on its merry way to the coordinator along with the photo and instructions so they know how I would like it set up! And no doubt I'll be checking on them before the reception too! (Cause i'm a little bit of a control freak like that!)

This is what we have done, we have numbered the boxes so they match up to the table numbers and a diagram of the table with who is sitting next to who etc. they r sat up in wedding HQ ready to go next Thursday.

I'd just ask the wedding coordinator if they will do it, I'm sure she will understand that you need to know.

I bought all our table decs, chair sashes etc ourselves and just took it to the hotel the day before with a note on what goes where, and they did it all for us. Don't pay an outside company to do it! xx

I'm a bit worried about this bit too!!?

Our venue will put out favors/name places/table planner etc but what about flowers/table centrepieces/wish tree/candles/other bits and bobs....!!

Can go into the venue at 11am, wedding is at 2pm, so thats not long to set up things and worrying about asking people to help when they need to get ready too!

Argh ---this is the one thing that is stressing me out about the whole day!!!

Janey - If you're having the centrepieces done by a florist, then I would have assumed they would set them up on the tables. For the other bits and bobs, can you ask a bridesmaid/usher/close family member to help set them up? Aside from getting her hair done and outfit on, my nan isn't going to have anything to do, so has offered to go put the postbox and guest book bits out.

The wedding coordinator at my hotel said she would do anything that didn't require a ladder, lol. So all placenames, scatter crystals, favours are fine. Then they get you in just before opening the room to check it's right and take photos before it gets messed up by guests!

I’m doing the flowers (and pretty much everything else!) myself, so it will be up to us to set the things up.

I will be getting ready with my sister (only bridesmaid) and Mum at home, about half an hours drive from the venue so just a bit worried about asking other people to do things when we can only go into the place at 11 and the wedding is at 2pm –when would they get ready?!

OH is only having best man and no ushers etc.

I am toying with the idea of staying at the hotel the night before so I can set things up myself, but can see myself getting stressed and not enjoying getting ready ect so don’t think this is the best plan…..

    Any ideas welcome!!!

Have you actually asked them if they will do it? If not then just ask, the way I see it, it is what you pay for so I would expect it from them.
