I have been pondering this for a while, we finally settled on words to do with marriage, so we have

    honesty
    loyalty
    commitment
    love

and I have already forgotten the other two! ?

Others have used football teams, players, holidays they have been on etc

We are big National Trust fans, so we are using the names of our favourite NT properties.

I was out for dinner with OH the other night and we were discussing this very subject. We were gonna go with the traditional '1,2,3.....etc', but after much discussion, decided it'd be a good talking point for our guests, so think we're gonna have proper table names now.

Yes, some of the suggestions were ridiculous, or wholly inapropriate, and at one point i was laughing so much that half the people in the restaurant were staring at 'the weird girl in the corner'!!?

Anyhoo.....seeing as tho h2b and i are both science nerds [:I], we're thinking of going with the theme of 'famous scientists', eg, darwin, hawking, rutherford......the list continues!! OH even suggested a fact sheet for each table about 'their' scientist and a quiz at the end.?

I was doing a bit of research earlier for a sample table plan, I googled 'wedding table names' and one of the top links was a long thread from Y&YW forum - had loads of good ideas.

We're having the names of our grandparents. All of mine are dead and h2b only has one left (who will, of course, be sitting at the table named after him!) so we thought this would be a nice way of acknowledging them. Our tables will be:
    Edward
    Elizabeth
    William
    Clara
    Reginald
    Florence
    Clifford
Worked out really well as both h2b's grandmothers were Elizabeth and we have seven tables. ?

Call us strange, but fiancee and I have gone for names of cheeses!

Bit different and we love cheese, so thought we may as well.

Went to wedding this weekend where they went for names of places which are significant which I think's already been suggested (first flat, uni, where met etc).

The wedding I went to last week had the GRAND SLAM as a table theme! It was in WALES, and they had the tables named after all 6 nations and the scores of the matches and highlighted details on each one. The way it was done was very T_I_C, but made everyone smile.?

I had different constellations because we had a star theme. We tried to choose ones that also had some link with us eg. Ursa Major (Great Bear) because ex-H's nickname was Bungle and Lyra (The Lyre) because I'm musical.

I liked the idea of granparents names and suggested it to OH, then he pointed out that it might be a bit weird having a table named after a grandparent he hasnt seen in years, who is still alive and yet has not been invited to the wedding! oops! ?

    We've consideed all sorts:

    - Holiday destinations we've been to
    - Variations on our purple colour theme (Violet, Plum, Aubergine, Lilac etc.)
    - 'Love' in different languages

We've now chosen but I can't share as IRL friends come on here and it's a surprise!

We are going with car names I think, for something a bit boy-friendly.

This is one of those things that changes daily though.....

We're having sweets...mainly because we're not having individual favours but are going to put the sweets the table is named after in glasses on the tables instead. A friend had it at her 21st and we really liked it, so we've stolen the idea! A few other people on here are / were doing that too, I think.

The only thing I would advise using with caution, is any list where there is a possibility of a 'ranking' for example,

Diamond, Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby, Garnet, Opal, Jade, etc
where some people may take the implication that Diamond is better than Jade and consequently more important. However you may want to take advantageous of this, have VERY close relatives or friends on Diamond, and people you hardly know ? on Jade!!!!!

An idea we have seen recently for a musician revolved around the names of composers, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms,Haydn, etc

Also were the Groom was a golfer and the Bride 'let' him have a say,? we have seen:
Peeble Beach, Gleneagles, Augusta, St Andrews, Sunningdale, Wentworth,

    Michelle ?

AFter reading this thread I have managed to convince the OH to have table names instead of boring old numbers. He (and a lot of his friends) love going surfing, so he thinks it would be good to have names of beaches known for good surf.

I love that idea. Our families are scattered, and he proposed on the top of a mountain in france on a snowboarding holiday. So, don't think I could use that idea!

How about mountains?? The name of the Mountain you were proposed on could be the top table.
