Table names - nice or naff?

Jay-Low, 28 March, 2011 at 20:29 Posted on Planning 0 30

We have decided to have names instead of numbers for our tables. Mainly to eradicate the heirachy it seems to create but also to add more of a personal touch. I have let OH decide on the names and he has come up with things to do with our engagement. We went to Disneyland Paris for the weekend and he proposed there so all the names would have a special meaning to do with that.

What do you think? Honest opinions welcome....

Ashford International

Coach 15

Marne Le Valle

Sequoia Lodge

Hunter's Grill

Newport Bay

Lake Disney

Annette's Diner

The 34 Euro Cocktail

Bollinger

My concern is that some of the names will be lost on our guests and not make much sense. Each table name holds a special memory to us for that weekend (hotel we stayed in, restaurant we ate dinner in just after proposal, lake he proposed next to, drink we bought to celebrate etc.)

Honestly? I would have to say naff. It's a nice thought and I actually think it is very romantic of your h2b to come up with it but, to me, it seems something that is more for just between the two of you really. Like you say, the significance of the names is likely to be lost on your guests unless you make a point of explaining it and then it's a bit sick-inducing. Or maybe I'm just an old cynic ?

    Hi

i think its really nice and like you say personal to you both and surely most people who will be at your wedding will know the story of your engagement, perhaps you could put in the meaning of the table names on the order of service/day or below the names? very romantic OH lucky you x

Sorry but I don't think it's naff at all. It's very nice and romantic of your OH to think of it.

At the end of the day, it's your wedding day and the day should reflect you two and what you love.

Here's an idea for you as i'm doing it with my table names, on one side put a picture of the place and the name then, the other side a little bit of info about it or why it means something.

Not really to my taste but I can understand the reasoning behind it, and would agree that some sort of explanation would definitely be useful if you went ahead and used them.

Certainly there does need to be some way to get round 'table heirarchy' if that's going to be a potential issue for you (and of course you know your guests far better than we do) and naming them instead of numbering them is a good way round it.

I think the idea is great. But maybe the choices need a bit of an edit.

If disneyland is special to you both, then how about disney charachters so people understand the link to the table names without needing to ask?

Our idea for table labelling is to still use numbers, but not your typical Table 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 etc...

but to chose numbers that mean things to us. Important dates etc. (A bit like choosing our lottery numbers)

So our tables will be labelled: 13, 15, 85, 2012, and so on....

I think it's a lovely idea. How about writing a small meaning or memory from that particular place under the table name? x

    I like it!

When I've been to weddings I love it when the table names are a bit cryptic and it's fun to sit and try to guess what the link might be, that's always been a good icebreaker when I've been on a table with people I don't know too Smiley smile

I think it's a fab idea but I would write a short story for everyone to read on their tables about the origin of the table name so people understand better Smiley smile

An alternative I guess would be to have "guess the significance of the table names" as part of a table trivia game?

I love all of them apart from Ashford International and Coach 15. All the others sound like they relate to somewhere special i.e Disneyland and elegant drinks you may have shared. It is nice that it was OH idea.

It doesn't matter if the guests don't know what they mean, it gives them something to ask each other or you about.

I think its a lovely idea, really meaningful, but id agree with what has been said, put a little note underneath explaining to people why they are sat at what table if you get me?

we really struggled with outs, first it was going to be ski resorts, then motorbike courses, but they were more for my OH benefit ha, so we changed to names of folours which we find the meaning signficant to us Smiley smile for example my immediate family table is called 'rose' with the meaning 'always remember' as they are family members who arent with us anymore. Some people thought it was a silly idea but its mine and my OH special day so its our choice!

Its your special day so make it about you Smiley smile x

My daughter had their favourite films in DVD covers in the table name holders but on the actual table seating plan, they had the names of characters from each of the films. It was done for the same reason as Viki says above to get people talking and guessing and a bit of an icebreaker. For example, they had Castaway DVD cover in the holder but Wilson the Ball on the seating plan.

I think it's really romantic and personal ? Slightly biased as we are doing something similar but London themed for our tables.

I think it's lovely and personal and definitely not naff, but I would personally appreciate an explanation as it would drive me crazy if I couldn't figure out the meaning!

I think it's a lovely idea, especially if you add a little explanation as to why that particular place is meaningful to you.

Can I ask where they got the table plan from? We're hoping to have a similar size and colour backing for ours.

I'm a fan of table names, I think numbers are a bit passe.

But even after studying your names for a while, they are completely lost on me, even knowing the theme.

    Are they rides at Disneyland?

It was by Laura of Maddox Designs - the surrounding bits of the table names were confetti and feathers embedded in perspex type of stuff which Laura suggested would look great if it was backlit so it shone through but unfortunately we couldn't position it near any lights where it could be seen. She did their invites too and we can't recommend her enough - brilliant customer service.

I think it's lovely that your OH has come up with these and am all for having table names that mean something rather than just random words but if I was a guest I'd probably be a bit miffed if I was on Coach 15 when others were on the much more exotic Sequoia Lodge (which I've stayed in and loved lol)

As with some of the others, I do think maybe some of the names will be lost on your guests. One solution could be to have a little explanatory note with each table name.

Or go for something a little more generic like Disney Characters?

Hmmm..I think it's a bit naff. It's like an in-joke between the two of you that no-one else can understand and could make people feel bemused or worse, excluded.

Do you really want to have to explain your table names??

I think that you should have whatever you want - It doesn't matter if someone thinks it's cheesy or naff it's what you think that counts... I think there are elements of everybodies weddings that could be descibed as naff (mine included) but I think that's just part of it being a wedding!

We were going to have 'things to do with us' first place we lived together, first holiday, first date etc and it didn't bother me a bit that people wouldn't necc understand - it's our wedding and our table names and they reflected us. We have since decided to do something else... only cos I like it more though Smiley smile

As is said a lot on here, it's your wedding!!

One last thing, you know your OH would he be upset if you told him you didn't want to use these names? it's nice that he's had the involvement and thought about it enought to ocme up with something like that... my OH bless him would never understand why 1-10 wouldn't be perfectly ok!

I'm in the 'neither nice or naff' camp, actually! Just have what you want!

One thing though, you're bound to get someone put out bring on 'Ashford International' with others on the more exotic 'Paris' or the like! It wouldn't bother me but you might want to bear it in mind, particularly if you're staying away from number for hierarchical reasons.

Not naff AT ALL!! We are doing something very similar. We have picked names that mean something to us, but the majority of people will not have a clue what they are or why we have picked them. But why should that matter?

Numbers are BORING. I think table names is just another conversation that will be had on the day, people wondering or trying to work out what it means.

I think that it is a nice idea - the guests are going to your wedding so every part of the day is personal to you and your OH so why not carry on the personal touches with your tables.

I have seen it where people have the table names like you - and like others have said put an explination as to why it is so personal and maybe even incorprate a picture of you both their in that specific location celebrating your happy moment.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Honest opinions really are helpful and I wouldn't get the same honesty from friends and family!

I think we will go with this idea but as some of you have suggested - with a bit of 'tweaking'. I think we need to bin off Ashford International and Coach 15 and change them for perhaps our favourite rides at the park so they sound a bit less er, 'industrial'? (can't think of the right word ?)

Will prob include a little explanation and pic on the reverse side of the table name card.

I suggested Disney characters to OH but apparently that IS naff ?

I don't think table names are naff per se, but I think Ashford Int and Coach 15 are odd choices.

I would try and think of other names to do with your engagement if it were me...

I am having numbers but only because we can't think of any table names.
