Take That at Wembley - answers to practical questions

KJB, 2 July, 2009 at 09:02 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 39

Morning all

I went to TT at Wembley last night and needless to say it was a certainly a spectacular show. I'm off out in a mo so pictures will have to wait but I thought I'd answer a few questions about the practical side of things.

We got there at about 4.45 after the last 6 miles taking us an hour (North Circular and Hangar Lane Gyratory System - say no more). We ended up parked in the multi-storey car park. On going in to the stadium our bags were checked. Small bottles of water were allowed but they removed and kept the caps. I had a couple of small cartons of juice which were fine. There are two stages, the main stage and the 'B' stage - this is where the ballon in, with a walkway between the two. Even by 4.45 there was no chance of getting even close to the walkway or B stage which had been our plan. There were people sitting down over at least half of the standing area.

I was pleased though that there was lots of shade provided, and most of the standing area was in shade - it was the top right which wasn't (as you look at the plan above). Also from about blocks 104 clockwise to about block 116 were the only places in the sun at this point - with this 'sunny window' moving clockwise. So in actual fact, after being prepared with sun hat, sun block and cover up, I was never in the sun at all. Paid £6 for water and a hotdog while waiting. Other options were nachos, pizza or chicken dippers.

We managed to find a place on the 'pitch' about in line with the 121/122 gangway. At about 5.45 everyone stood up and moved forward - we were by 124/123 then. Gary Go was immediately forgettable, and James Morrison was OK.

There was a 'drinking water' sign by the gangway of 125/124 which we ended up in line with when people moved forward even more when TT came on - so we were about 10m from the main stage.

It was bloody hot, even in the shade, and the portable mini fan had with me was a god send. There was a big announcement that those standing could use spare pitch-side seats and there were a few deliberately left empty for this reason. A few girls around us had to go and sit down to get out of the heat. Every now and then there was a cool breeze which was lovely.

Programmes were £20, T-shirts (a huge selection) were £20, 25, or 30, necklace = £15 or keyring £12 I think. Postcards £5. Mini stress ball a few quid. Also umbrellas, red noses. I was going to get a stress ball thing at the end (I didn't actually see them, my friend said she'd seen them earlier) but the stand we looked at on our way back to the carpark didn't seem to have them - and my friend didn't want to queue up for too long to ask as she wanted to get back tothe car to miss the traffic.

As it happened it then took us 1h45 to get out the carpark! And booooo to the tossers who decided to end the evening with an altercation about letting people out of car parking spaces. Double booooo to those who sat in the queue with their engines running. And triple booooooo to the car who decided we all had to listen to their music......which was R&B sh!te and not even TT.

So, a little plea as well, if anyone is yet to go, and you get a chance to buy a stress ball thing (if such a thing exists and my friend wasn't mistaken) could you buy me one and post it to me - I'll pay of course, and for the package/posting.

Right, god, is that the time - I need to leave the house in about 5 mins...must get dressed.

Hope this info is of some use - you'll have a fabulous time. I'm a bit hoarse this morning from all the screaming!

The whole of Level 1 (the blue area) is un-reserved seating - we got cracking seats in block 123, having arrived at about 6.15.

If you're standing, don't queue for the loos outside the stadium, go through the turnstiles and there are loads more loos in the middle bit where all the food is.

I'm going on Friday KJB, I'll pick one up for you if I can.

Did you happen to see how much the mugs were? 20 quid is steep for a programme, it better be a good one ?

Thanks, CDL, I don't have a great history with TT mugs (broke both my 2006 and 2007 ones) but I have to buy one. It's almost tradition now, Mr Hole and I will have a bet on how long it lasts ?

Thanks also to KJB for her tips, really helpful ?

Oh, thank you, I was fine. It was nothing like Milton Keynes, which is where I got freaked out, because there aren't as many people standing, and it's not sloped so you can't SEE all these people and feel hemmed in. I knew I could get to the edge quite easily so I had a great time, right up to sitting in the carpark for two hours waiting to get out!

mr c got a queen/paul rogers one at the MEN, and someone behind us knocked their beer over and it spilled onto it, totally drenching it. mr c was livid. you don't often see him angry but he was that day. ?

Thanks so much for posting this KJB.

I am off tomorrow and really anxious about it - mainly because of the heat being 28 weeks preggers.

I have the choice of standing tickets or those in block 213 - do you think I would get a seat in the unreserved area if I opted for standing?

And just paid for car park... not looking forward to a nearly 2-hour wait to get out but I suppose it would be better than being crushed on the train.

Thank you KJB - you're a star! Was about to post a rambly tell-me-about-TT-at-Wembley post so that was really helpful.

Did anyone get the tube there/back? I've been to Wembley before for football so am guessing tube queues will be similar?

    I'm going on Sunday ?

I think 99% of people not in their cars were on the tube. That's the direction we were all sent in anyway and were told that it was a 30-40 min wait. I'd be interested to know whether it was as well organised in the station as it appeared from the outside- we peeled off at the station entrance for the 83 bus and were the only concert-goers on it. We were at our friend's place in Finchley within 90mins of the end of the concert.

We didn't go for the tube that was right next to the stadium. We needed to get to Watford as we decided at the last minute to stay nearish to the stadium. It was a 10-15 min walk and invloved a lot of walking fast but we got on the first train on the overground and were back within 35 mins of the concert ending. It was absolute mayhem traffic wise though.

We got the tube. We had a long queue to get to the station but inside it was fine and they kept crowd control by limiting the numbers going in. We didn't get to Kings Cross until 11.50 though so if you need to get connecting trains I would leave before the end of the concert.

Also note the ways out on the outside of the stadium, loads of us were lost as we were 1 level up from where we thought we were (by loads I mean thousands) Getting down to the road level was a nightmare.

Drinks wise they take away the lids from your water. So buy double the water you need and take the extra lids with you to replace after you get in or save lids from earlier in the day.

Just a quiky i wonder how anyone else copes with the toilet cues ? im one of those people if i need to go i need to go now. i was at wembley wednesday and it was fab, especialy the elephant. i had been freaking about the toilets and the crowds though. my freind in the end persuaded me of a solution, wich is a bit embarassing but worked.

tenna slips, not just the little pads but almost like nappies for grownups. http://www.tena.co.uk/en/general/products---healthcare/tena-islipi-maxi/. avoided the need for the loos, these are a bit bulky but didnt exactly notice under my dress and was able to change under a blanket when we got back to the car, just my solution ,i wonder what other people do.

and same question on wedding day emergencys, mums now sudgesting i wear one during the wedding.

the other trick my friend had picked up from glastonbury crowds to stop us getting split up wich i was realy greatfull for especialy leaving the stadium, we used her freinds daughters wrist stap thing and so were atatched to each other in the crowd, and on the train untill we got back to the car park

? WHAT???? Thats very bizarre, like someone else said - I just exercise some selfcontrol. I needed the loo most of way through the TT concert at Hampden and didn't actually get around to peeing until I got back to Edinburgh at 1.30am!!!! Am sure I have done some damage to my kidneys......

That 'tis indeed a bizarre 1st post.....

So you just pee into the nappy cutting out all need for the loo? Would work well with peg and hareem trousers at the moment. I think you're on to a winner.

Also, if tena could make one in the shape of a thong I think that would definitely be suitable for a wedding.

I am seeing TT tomorrow ( nappy questions aside) how easy is it to get to Wembley Central as I need to get back to Milton Keynes and there is a 11pm and an 11.58 train from Wembley Central.

Have I ANY chance of dragging my excited neice onto the 11pm train or would I need to leave early to do that.

    Cheers

    :-)

They're contracted to do one more album, Lois. It's been 18 months since the last tour so I would assume it will be the same sort of time again until the next one.

Want me to phone you during Never Forget tonight ?
