Taking back children's shoes. a WWYD?

Unique at last, 12 May, 2009 at 21:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

On Saturday, I bought my daughter a new pair of Clarks' shoes from an outlet store. I had her feet measured and they came up a 4 and a half F. (Her shoes had been a 3 and a half so I did feel 'bad mummy' for her feet having gone up a whole size?).

I put a few pairs on her and they all seemed fine so we (I) picked a pink pair with a cross over strap.

They seemed ok on Sunday but yesterday her childminder complained that they kept coming off- she said it really wasn't Moo puling them off, they just "flipped off". This morning as Moo was walking to her CM's door, a shoe just came off as she walked. They are velcro but I had done them up tight and she hadn't been pulling at them. When I picked her up today, her CM said (in a jokey but serious way) that Moo wasn't to come wearing them tomorrow as she'd nearly lost them in town 3 times and they just kept coming off when Moo was walking. She said I needed to take them back as they were just not good enough shoes for Moo. I do think she is right - especially as we have a worry about Moo's balance as it is, she falls over very easily.

The WWYD is that I know shoe shops can be right sh1tty about taking shoes back especially as they have been worn outside so they won't be able to resell. Am I within my rights to demand a refund or a different pair of shoes? Clarks kind of have us over a barrel in Ashford as they are the only retailer that do fitted children's shoes. Gaaah. I never had these problems with Alex and Start Rite shoes!

If they have been fitted incorrectly by a member of staff I would expect to be able to exchange them

I'd be taking them back and I'd be in a right old cob about it too. Clarks mark their receipts if they're self-fitted (Lexi won't go next or near a shoe fitter), so I'm sure there will be much more payback if they were fitted by staff.

Thanks guys. I'll go in firm tomoorow. After all, even in an outlet, those shoes aren't cheap. Smiley smile

For me it would depend if they were fitted by a member of staff or not. From your initial post it sounds as though she was measured but then you just tried the shoes yourself in which case I'm not sure you can expect the shop to take them back, afterall different styles fit differently.

Wss. Did a staff member just measure or did he/she actually fit the shoe too? I don't think you could take them back if you put the shoes on your daughter, thought they fitted fine then had her walk around in them for a few days and decide that they didn't fit after all.

Take them back. If a member of staff measured and fit them then there shouldn't be a problem with returning them. I used to work for Clarks measuring childrens' feet and fitting shoes. Parents always came back if the fit wasn't spot on and rightly so IMHO.

They do a number of checks when measuring and one is to check there's no gaping or heel slippage which there obviously is.

I bought MissSun some shoes a while back from a startrite supplier, they were fitted. I said I wanted them to last but I think the woman took it a bit literally and went up nearly a whole size. When I got home I realised that even on the tightest buckle they slipped off without undoing them so I took them back and got half a size smaller.

At our Clark's outlet, they specifically say at the till, "have these been fitted by a member of staff?" and ask to see the fitting receipt. If they haven't been fitted, they say they can't take them back due to fitting problems.

Well I have to do a massive N&P for the Clarks Outlet shop in Ashford. I took them back, explained the problem and they exchanged the shoes without quibble at all. The girl who served me had Moo try on every other pair of 4 and a half F but we finally settled on a pair that was an E fitting as her feet were on the cusp of the 2 width fittings.

The girl that served me today did say that she had no idea why the designers had made that particulare shoe as the ankle support was poor. Smiley smile She was great and I'll definitely look out for her next time.

Glad it worked out ok. Don't feel bad about going up more than one shoe size, in my experience these things go in fits and starts. Sometimes they're in a pair of shoes for months and others just a few weeks.
