Taking shoes with you when ordering dress

MrsB2015, 14 October, 2014 at 20:59 Posted on Planning 0 10

Hi all, I am going on Saturday to order my dress and to be measured but she has told me to take my shoes. I haven't bought any shoes yet so she informed me to take something that would be the same height as what I would wear. I've not even looked at shoes so don't know. I don't wanna rush and panic buy something.

Phase anyone else been told to take shoes when ordering a dress?

Xx

I didn't take any shoes when I ordered my dress but did when I needed fittings etc. I don't see why you would need shoes as it's likely to need turning up anyway. Have you got an idea of the heel height you would go for and have you got anything similar?

Is the dress being made to order? Mine is and I had to go in and be measured for it when the order was placed with the designer a couple of months after I ordered it with the dress shop, but I didn't need to take shoes as it's tea length so heel height didn't matter. I can understand why it would be needed for a floor length made to measure dress, though.

She did say something actually about IT being made to measure but when I looked on the website it says in comes in 2 lengths and its standard dress sizes so I know the whole dress can't be made to measure as she said she would order the closest size and take it in.

I havnt even thought of shoes so no idea what heel length I want and now I feel rushed as its Saturday xx

    How tall are you?

As far as I am aware they tend to come in two lengths. I'm 5'7.5 and so if I was planning on wearing a big heel the shop would have ordered the longer length but as I'm only planning on about a one nice heel the standard length is fine?

My advise to stop you worrying though is just take the highest pair of heels you own/can imagine wearing for a whole day and it can be ordered with this in mind. The theory being in can always be taken up but they can't make it longer if you want a higher heel than you initially thought?

    Hope that helps Smiley smile

Normally a made to measure dress is ordered in a specific size closest to what you are and then altered to fit you exactly. Most birdalwear shops have a seamstress attached that does all the alterations. That includes length - which will need taking up according to how tall you are in the heels you will be wearing on the day. You don't want a dress to be longer than you need as it will just drag on the floor and not hang properly.

If this is your first fitting then I would do as others have suggested and take the highest heels you would normally wear. But you need to bear in mind that at some point before your final fitting you will need to have the shoes you are wearing so they can alter the dress properly.

    Hi

I didn't take shoes when I went to buy my dress only for the fittings. It is at the fittings that they need to get the length right. I found most of the dresses in the shops were samples and not in my size anyway. The one I bought I tried on in a size 16 (I am a size 10) and they pinned it all at the back to show me what it looked like. It was also far too long. When my dress arrived in the shop I went for a fitting and it was then I needed my shoes (and they also suggest the bra) you will wear on the day. This helps get the perfect fit. Mine is now in the process of been altered, final fitting on 27th for wedding on 6th novemeber

I knew I would need to take them for the fitting but not when I am ordering it. The dress is heavy lace on the bottom so not sure how much they can alter it after.

Think I might just try some shoes on in the shop and see what heel length I feel comfy in then hope I find some shoes in that height I like.

    Thanks girls

    xx

I didn't take any shoes when i first when to look (and subsequently chose my dress!). If you buy shoes now how do you know what dress you will pick to make sure the shoes are going to go with it? I have just bought my shoes (arrived last, love them!) and will be taken them with me when my dress comes in in Jan/Feb.

My dress has lace around the bottom and the lady said they are made in a way that they can take the lace detail off, take up the material and then put the lace back on? I tried on sample shoes of an average height, but they didn't take my height measurement at all. just bust, waist and hips i think. So can't see why you need to rush, until it comes in?

When I went to try on dresses order my dress I didn't take shoes with me (it was the same day), I borrowed a pair in the shop to try dresses on (according to my mum and MOH trying wedding dresses on with black spotty socks is a big no no ?, I couldn't see the problem, ha), the only thing they measured when I ordered the dress was, bust, waist and hips, they didnt measure the length

I was told to bring the shoes with me to any fittings when I have them so they can alter the length, so I dont have to worry about tripping over it all day. They also mentioned bringing underwear with me that I have brought, most probably for the same reasons, but im holding off on buying that, the shoes on the other hand, I needed no excuse to go shoe shopping ?

How far off is the wedding? maybe they are trying to get the alterations all done when you order it?
