Taxi, Limo or Shuttle?

Fenella Fudge, 3 August, 2008 at 13:04 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

From JFK to hotel in New York?

What do you think?

Last time I went, 5 years ago, we ended up in this huge stretch limo which was a bit ott! So this time I'm trying to put a bit more thought into it so should I prebook a shuttle? Get a taxi after we land or book a car?

Anyone got any experience?

Thanks.

Taxi. They are a fixed price from JFK into Manhattan (or they were last time I went). Limos are good if there are a few of you that won't all fit into one taxi with your cases. I've never had to wait long for one - there are usually loads of them all lined up outside the terminal. And I always always pick the one who smells or wants to drive like he's a formula one driver and scares me witless with near misses!

    Thanks for the replies.

Sciver - so you dont have to queue for ages to get a taxi?

Koobie - did you book a return? When are you going? We're going in Sept - really looking forward to it!

I'd personally get a taxi when you get there. The shuttles take AGES if you aren't one of the first drop offs.

We have been 3 times and each time have jumped straight in to a taxi to the hotel. We have arrived there at mid morning, lunch time and evening and we have never had to queue.

It is easy to do and it is a fixed price from JFK to Manhattan.

When we went to NYC for part of our honeymoon we just got a cab straight from the airport to our hotel, like others have said, it's a fixed rate. When we were going back, our hotel had black cars that they put on that were cheaper than the fixed yellow cab taxi rate so we got one of those back, the hotel arranged that for us!

We went a couple of years ago, 4 of us, and got a taxi on fixed fare from airport to city but then booked a town car to take us back as fares aren't fixed from Manhattan to airport but the town car cost is. Worked out about US $ 5 more but our driver avoided a large traffic jam and we saw loads of taxis sitting in it, racking up their fare!

Google says fixed fare is US $ 45 plus toll & tip.

WTS about the taxi. There's a special rank outside and a guy sorts out your ticket and payment in advance etc and gets the taxi for you and I think you just give the taxi the voucher. Reasonable too. You have to pay tolls on top but it wasn't much.
