Teaching in Scotland

July, 4 November, 2008 at 14:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Looking for info on how to become a teacher (what qualifications, training is required etc) in Scotland. Can anyone recommend any websites.

Its actually for OH, only thinking about it at the moment until he finds out what would actually be involved. As I'm bored at work I thought I would have a look to see if I could find anything but not sure what are the best webistes.

thanks.

Sorry, should also have asked, does he have a degree (if so, in what?).

Sorry, forgot to put in that it would be at college rather than school. He doesn't have a degree but has been a chef for 21 years and has been always been interested in teaching catering but never been sure what would be involved in getting qualified.

I'm completely clueless, would he still need to get a degree?

I don't know about teaching in college- I wouldn't imagine he'd need a degree, although if he has any catering qualificatoins Id imagine they'd help. I would suggest you have a look at the colleges in your area which offer catering or hospitality courses and contact them directly to see how you apply for vacancies, and what credentials are required. Courses like that which are more 'hands on' tend to rely more on experience than anything else, and it sounds like he has lots of that.

Thanks for that. I'm going to have a search to see what jobs are available.

Ah, so a course in Stirling probably wouldnt be much use to you!

As far as I'm aware just now, the law changed/is changing to mean that its necessary for lecturers in Higher Education to have a qualification. However this isnt the case for further education, colleges etc, at the moment. I *think* that this is due to be changed also but I really am not sure.

Useful websites for general advice are http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/aboutlts/ and http://www.teachinginscotland.com/

A lot of what they say won't be relevant but it will hopefully give you a good starting point. It may also be worth having a look at your local college's website etc to see if they have an HR dept who could help.

Thanks for that. Nearly home time for me, I'll check the websites out when I get home.
