Technical Band question.....

Gillsy, 22 November, 2009 at 21:52 Posted on Planning 0 11

We have seen a band that we are thinking of booking. Its 3 guys - drums, base guitar, lead guitar & vocals. They have 'high end, boutique guitar and amps" according to their website?!?!?!

Now, my question is - will this sound a bit empty??? Somebody had said to me that you need something else like a backing track or keyboards to fill the gap - is this true???? Does anybody have any experience of this type of thing? I'm not technical when it comes to musical instruments and bands.

Also, whilst I'm on this - for the people who are having bands, how many are in your band and what instruments are they playing???

Cheers x

Shouldn't sound empty at all. Some bands have effects pedals if they need extra oomph/presence, but I wouldn't worry if I were you.

My band have three people - exactly the same instrument mix as yours...

Thanks Jumbly Girl - think I'm just worrying needlessly.

We went to hear them in their studio on Wednesday night and they sounded good to me. They play weddings and have some really good reviews on the website although I guess they would never publish any bad reviews....lol

Are you from Scotland or have I got that wrong???

We're having a 3 piece band as well and they just have 2 guitars and backing tracks which sounded really good when we heard them. We could have gone with the 5 piece and had a drum and keyboard but it wasn't worth the extra cash and the band themselves said that as our venue has a noise limiter (still not entirely sure what it is or what it does) that it would be best not to have the drum.

So no I don't think it will sound empty, they will have a backing track that will fill in for any instruments they don't have.

I am indeed, although my ma has disowned me because my accent has becoming distinctly anglified after only 5 years down south and she says I have lost my national identity [:'(]

I've seen a bloke with one instrument have a room rocking. Its not how many instruments they have, its their ability to entertain thats important.

Yep - that's me on the dark side - shhh! I didn't think we were supposed to admit to any goings on outwith Hitched.... I feel like a traitor. ?

Wedding is in Scotland, planning happening from down south... but ma's at home doing all the important stuff like cake testing ? But I'm home for Christmas in a few weeks so I can get a wriggle on with real planning as opposed to forum lurking - hooray!

How funny, Gillsy: you've hijacked your own post!

Getting married at Ross Priory, Gartocharn (I'm a westie, like you). Band we've booked after months of deliberation are DDW (Dignan, Dowell, and White) - I just love 'em. Did you say you were looking at Franco? I just checked out their site - they look awesome!

I know - I've kinda gone off the topic on this one but hey ho.

Yeah, we are probably going to book Franco - will get the deposit sorted out before Xmas then I can cross it off the list.

    Hi

Don't worry about it - it'll be all about their PA - that's what will make them sound big or small. A lot of bands go out in a small combo like this. I'd steer clear of bands with backing tracks
