Tell me about Prague..

stephanieeff, 14 August, 2012 at 19:07 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

Other half and I are wanting to get a nice weekend away somewhere for my birthday in November, last year I was so ill we didn't celebrate it (it was my 21st too so wanting to do something special). We were in talks up to about a month ago about having a joint Hen & Stag trip to Prague for a shooting weekend, but this fell flat as we figured most of the people we'd want there wouldn't be able to afford it, so we're thinking of going for my birthday with another couple we know.

No-one has ever been that we know to talk to, and while we would be going there primarily for the shooting thing, that would only be one day out of 3 or 4, so if anyone can tell me anything about it I'd love to hear your stories, good or bad! And any hotel recommendations very much welcome too Smiley smile

I agree about the mooching and the architecture. I recommend getting the Top 10 guide as it has maps and all the best things to do, places to eat etc. I remember there being some lovely squares with cafes where you can sit and admire the buildings. There's a bridge that you just have to walk over and the boat trip on the river is worth doing as well.

We stayed at the Hilton, we got a fantastic deal on Lastminute. Although it's a bit out of the centre it's near a tram stop and is very plush indeed.

Oooh prague! what a city. we went for Christmas a few years ago and it was officially the most romantic trip of my life. the city is just stunning. the old town is full of small windy streets with cafés on every corner where you can sit outside with blankets and have hot chocolate or beer Smiley smile the square in the old town (where the markets are every year) is a great place to sit and there is the astronomical clock that you have to see on the hour, very extravagant procession. there's the new town too, which has an incredible history due to communism and the october revolution of 1989. there's a small but interesting communism museum. we followed a walking tour from the guide book (either lonely planet or rough guide) around this area which was brilliant. in fact we did a few of them and they were really good.

other things to do include the castle as mentioned - which is like a walled city and will fill an afternoon wonderfully. we also did the franz kafka museum which was surreal but great. and we did a walking tour of the jewish quarter which was brilliant.

we stayed at mamaison hotel riverside prague, booked through last minute. http://www.mamaison.com/prague-riverside-hotel-prague.html the room was wonderfully decadent (very ornate design). technically speaking it's outside the city centre but only a ten minute walk to charles bridge (THE bridge you have to walk over) and the pubs and cafes near us were very cheap - that's where we could get pints for €0.50! it's close to the staropramen brewery/museum if you like brewery tours.

We really had an incredible time. you'll love it.

    I love Prague.

H took me away as a surprise the day after he proposed. We went Monday-Thursday.

He'd been before for a stag weekend and did say the city was very different midweek compared to a weekend. More relaxing midweek he said - busy but with a 'more discerning' tourist! (Not sure where we fit in with that! Ha).

Agree with everyone else about the architecture - it's fabulous.

Please go to El Mojito bar - best champagne mojitos ever. But beware - they're lethal.

El Toro Negro is a fabulous steakhouse.

There's also a lovely pizza place right next to Wenceslas Square - will try and remember what it's called.

I went a few years back before it because popular for stag and hen doos and it was brilliant! I went a couple of years ago for work too but din't really get a chance to venture out!

We went to the castle for changing of the guards, across the bridge, we went to a Tourture museum and a sex museum!

there are loads of little tea shops which are like sitting in peoples front rooms! the tea selection is amazing, Ive not yet found a ginger tea to match the ones I had there!

when I was there you could get a stein of beer for 50p but Im guessing that has gone up now!

We staying in an apartment but I have a friend who went more recently and they stayed in a hotel on a boat!

ETA: This "Tourture museum and a sex museum" makes we sound a bit odd ? Im not, honest!

One word, stunning. It really is a beautiful place. H and I went in 2005 for my 21st Mon-Fri. Would highly recommend it. We were recommended a restaurant - think it was called The Needles. Food was lovely - whether it's it's still there or not, I don't know. The buildings were stunning. H took me round round the Natural History Museum on the day of my birthday, I never let him live it down but it was really interesting. xxx
