Tell me about Turkey

HeidiHole, 26 April, 2009 at 19:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Please. More specifically Marmaris/Icmeler, or any other nice places you'd recommend there. There are 6 of us going and it's a family holiday to celebrate my Brother's 40th birthday, so a bit of everything is needed I think.

I fankoo ?

<PS, I'm probably going to be really annoying with these travel Qs until we choose and book something, so sorry in advance and all that ?>

I don't like Marmaris, Icmeler is nice. For me Marmaris is Blackpool in the sun, geared toward drinking day and night. Mr R is Turkish and he would choose Icmeler.

Ooh, we don't want Blackpool in the sun at all! Blurgh.

Thank you, Rhea, is Icmeler the place to go or does Mr R have any other lovely recs I should be looking at? There are two children going who will be 14 and 3 when we travel.

Loof, thank you for trying, lovely ?

I've only been to Olu Deniz and really liked it. We stayed at Lykia World which is fab and great for kids too. 17 pools one of which is a great childrens pool with slides etc. The spa is also fab and it has 2 adult only infinity pools if you can escape the kids!

Mum and dad have been to Icmeler and really liked it too although OH's parents say its a lot more built up now but still very nice.

Marmaris is a bit Blackpool esque, but not as bad as some places. We had a lovely holiday, we spend most of our time in our hotel which was about 5-10 mins on the dolamus (little bus that comes every 30 secs that takes you everywhere!) Lovely restaurants though. Icmeler is nice, a bit too quite for my liking, the beach is a lot better than marmaris but still not great. There only about 20mins away by the dolamus so you can get the best of both worlds. We're getting married in Olu Deniz which is lovely. WE also met in Gumbet and i would make this a definate no no!!! It's more of an 18-30's place but they don't tell you that! Rubish restaurants and beach! x

We went to Marmaris last year and although we had a fab holiday i'll agree with what everyone else says about it being a hot Blackpool! Very catered towards the brits - English breakfasts, Sunday roasts, football bars etc. Fine if you like that sort of thing but I prefer to try local food when i'm away - did find some nice restaurants if we stayed away from the busier streets.

Marmaris is dreadful. And I'm afraid I didn't really like Icmeler either. Olu Deniz is much, much nicer mate. If you need any questions answered, let me know - I've been to Turkey 7 times. ?

? you sound like me. I've asked umpteen questions about Turkey. My parents hated Marmaris but liked Icmeler. I've looked at Hisaronu, Gumbet and Bodrum and some people have said they're nice, some have said they're vile (Gumbet and Bodrum anyway). I get the impression Turkey is like Marmite, you either love it or hate it.

H and I have said that we will try it and if we don't like it we won't go again. Unfortunately the bargain hols we found were Gumbet and Bodrum so I expect that's where we'll be trying.

Thanks so much everyone, I will avoid Marmaris like the proverbial plague then.

Wonkle, I had no idea you were such a Turkey aficionado, how did I not know this ?

Sun, it's hard because my Bro has no ties so wants a holiday where he can let his hair down a bit, my mum is 60 and not in great health so wants to chill out and relax and we have the kids. Someone is going to end up p1ssed off whatever we choose ?

We went to Bodrum last year and loved it - there is a bit of something for everyone.

If your brother wants to party there are plenty of bars but if your mum wants to chill out and relax there are some nice beaches and plenty of shops.

Make sure you pick a hotel with good kids entertainment or they may be bored, esp as Turkey is soooo hot!

I don't think so, I think you can find a resort to suit you all, you can find a hotel close enough to the action for your H but far enough for your mum to relax. The hotel we found in Gumbet seems like that, close to the centre but far enough you can avoid it if you want. My concerns were mainly around the men and how much the turkish people like children, I know they mean well but if someone tries to pick MissSun up MrSun won't be too pleased, putting it mildy.

My sister went to Fethiye last year with her inlaws. There was MIL & FIL who are late 50s, SIL & Partner who are early 30s with no kids, then sis and her partner who are late 20s with a toddler. There was something for them all to do. Beautiful beaches, clubs & bars, shopping galore and kids clubs. She loved it so much they are going back to the same place this year but with some friends. It looks gorgeous. I just can't think of the name of the hotel. Club Lagoonas or something. Sun knows, she was looking at the same place.

I live in Turkey, and although I don't have any specific recommendations for Med. or Aegean resorts, I have also heard that Marmaris is to be avoided. I have been to a couple of nice Med. resorts called Kizkalesi and Anamur, but I don't think you can book to go there through a UK package company. Could be wrong though!

Sunset, there's no need to be concerned about the men - people do stare quite a lot in general but there isn't anything to worry about (no more than anywhere else). It's true that Turkish people love children but they will have the good manners not to randomly pick up your child.
