Tell me about your bathroom floor

Knownowt, 31 March, 2009 at 09:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

Am trying to redesign our bathroom at the moment. It's a very small room so I want to keep most of it quite light. I have been thinking about white bath, sink, loo etc, cream tiles, dark wood panel on bath, white or cream walls. The house is Victorian and I'm keen to keep the bathroom vaguely in keeping, so not super-modern.

I'm stuck on the floor though. I had been thinking about rubber tiles in a dark colour like black, dark brown or slate grey. When I mentioned this to H he wasn't keen and said that dark rubber tiles will make it look like a bondage den and that a dark colour will make the room look small.

What do you have on your bathroom floor? What colour is it? I can't really get my head round a light coloured floor. Whatever we have, it needs to be practical with little children (easy to clean and ideally not too hard if you fall on it).

If anyone has any photos, I'd be v interested in them.

We have laminate which I hate.

I can thoroughly recommend Karndean though - we have it in our kitchen in tile effect and it's fabulous. So easy to clean and pretty much bombproof.

My bathroom is tiny, though reasonably modern. It has light-grey rectangular tiles on the wall with white grout, and square mid-grey tiles on the floor with dark grout. I really like it actually (it's obv not our choice, as in rented), and the mid-grey floor doesn't make it feel any smaller, I don't think so anyway. tiles may not be that practical with small children, though they aren't slippery when wet, but the colour is fine. Plus it really, really doesn't show the dirt half as much as the other bathroom with white floor tiles. That one's a nightmare for looking grubby.

I have the tiniest (no window) bathroom in the world so wanted to keep it as light and as bright as possible and went with white tiles and a white marmoleum floor.

The marmoleum is lovely, the white was a mistake. Shows up every speck of dust and hair.

Mine is kind of a mid-cream large ceramic floor tile. It's really cold underfoot and I'm sure you'd crack your head open on it if you slipped. Not recommended ?

Another mid cream ish largeish ceramic tile..but we have underfloor heating, which is worth every every penny. One thing I have noticed with this is that the grouting, which is cream too, is permanently darkened/dirty looking where people have been in and out of the bathroom with their shoes on, I could/will attack it with a toothbrush and some sort of enviro-f*ck soon, but I wish I'd gone for darker grout.

We have just put in strand woven mulberry flooring which was easy to fit (T&G) and I'm really pleased with it.

Thanks everyone, that's really helpful. Haven't heard of Karndean before- shall have a look. Also hadn't considered underfloor heating- is it hugely expensive?

SGL, I really like the shape of your sink etc. Did you buy them yourselves and, if so, where from?

Depends - there are two types iirc. One that links in with your central heating system and uses hot water, and one that is electric. There are advantages/disadvantages to both. Adding to central heating can be a pita but then if you're taking out the radiator not neccessarily a big deal. It usually needs more depth though, so you might not be able to add it on top of existing floorboards without then needing a step up into bathroom. The electric one is very thin, so no extra depth needed, but you do need to get it wired in to fusebox which might mean redecorating. Electric can be expensive to run.

My sister has the most fabulous vinyl tiles from Harvey Maria - she has a very traditional Victorian bathroom and it looks great.

They do free samples by post - she got loads and this was the one she went for. I love them and am going to shamelessly copy her as they look so nice.
