Tell me that it's wrong....

Pinkbunny, 2 May, 2008 at 10:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

.... to still give a shit about the company that I used to work for.

I've moved on, and my new project is keeping me busy and stretching me (in all kinds of good ways so glad that I took the plunge ? )... but I still find it very satisfying to hear that the Managing Director that I used to work for has finally woken up to the fact that I saved his arse too many times, and that he is struggling to control the situation as the company fails to bring in the fraction of new business that I genertated last year, and that everyone is leaving.

I'm trying to move on and forget it, but I've got all my former colleagues calling me up asking for advice....

I think it's natural to care about a company that you invested a lot into, not wrong. Also, it could be a lot worse- they could be thriving in your absence! ?
I take it business is going really well? ?

A girl I used to work with is going through the same thing. We both handed in our notice at the same time and both left on the same date (we couldn't have planned it if we tried!), but she introduced loads of new IT stuff and then trained me how to use all the systems. Then they found a replacement for us both, and the idea was that she would start during our notice period so we could train her up! She was useless and they sacked her, and the girl they now have only had 2 days with us to learn everything.

The girl I used to work with gets at least one call every week asking for help because they cannot figure out where anything is, or how it all works and the business is suffering because of it! She has now taken to telling them that she doesn't know/can't remember/isn't sure and her personal favourite. "I can't explain it over the phone, I would have to come in, but it would have to be a weekend, and I would expect to be compensated for my time" ?

It is satisfying to know that they can't cope without you though ?

It's not wrong, if you worked there for any length of time then of course you will be invested in the place and the people. You just have to hang on to the fact that you did the best thing for you which is all you really can do.

MrSC is in a similar boat, he's leaving his company after 6 years, only place he's ever worked and is feeling guilty. But he's been unhappy for so long that a move cannot possibly make things worse at this stage. Somewhat complicated by the fact that the company he's moving to have still not come back with a firm salary offer and response to his queries so he hasn't officially accepted the job anyway. Hopefully they will today or I won't be impressed!

? cheers... just trying to make sense of how I feel. I've seen more of my former colleagues (who currently work there...but not for much longer) this week than the MD has. It is really none of my business, and I shouldn't really be wasting mental energy on this when I've got my own "baby" to look after, yet I was there for 7 years and put so much into it.

Business is going ok - not setting the world alight just yet, but building momentum, slowly but surely. And really enjoying what I do ?

Sounds like there's nothing for him to feel guilty about - Positive vibes headed his way....

I still check my old company's website, and snigger at how much of the work I used to do isn't getting done, a year after I left?

I took so much pleasure when I found out I'd started an exodus of my team from my former employers.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Sounds like you're just getting the recognition you deserved back then belatedly.

As long as you don't begrudge advising old colleagues and it isn't draining you so that you can't focus on your own new project - it's probably a useful confidence boost for you?

Thank you, I'm soooo hoping he'll find out today.

Baron - MrSC will be the third person to leave his company in as many weeks when he hands his notice in, it's only a company of 15 so the guilt is mostly that of being at the tail end of the 'exodus' ?

My old employer gets reviews on a website here which I was told about by someone in the same line of work and they make interesting reading - I find it reassuring in a way to see that other people think it's as big a disaster area as I thought it was ?

I think your feelings are entirely natural! I feel the same about nmy old company - I check the web site from time to time and get a peverse sense of pleasure from seeing the badly-worded, incorrectly puncutated, ungrammatical press releases they post up. And some of the stuff they stick up on the media section - just demonstrates they don't know their corporate a*S* from their elbow ..... they fired the PR agency too, and now they've gone right back to where they were three years ago when I first joined them. What a waste of all my efforts!

    ? hello you.

No, I don't begrudge giving my old colleagues advice in some way, it's nice to stick some clothes on (I work from home in my PJs most of the time) and get out and meet them for a coffee.
