Term Time Midweek weddings and Minimoons

Katianne, 28 December, 2012 at 15:43 Posted on Planning 0 7

My head is spinning trying to work out a date for our wedding.

We would like to get married around October / November 2013 ideally. September is out because I work at a college and that's one time we are not allowed time off. So we thought October time as I can try and incorporate it with half term, so that taking 3 weeks off for the wedding and honeymoon wasn't such a problem with work (one week would be holidays with two during term time). However, we are looking at a midweek (Thursday) wedding as this saves us a lot of money, but our venue is already booked for the school October half term, meaning our niece and nephew would have to get a couple of days off school. I haven't got children so I'm not sure how schools view this....?

Also, I'm a bit worried about taking all our holidays in one chunk. It would only leave us with a week to take for the rest of the year. We could have a mini moon and go away in the Spring, but my OH is worried it won't feel like a honeymoon then? I'm just confused now and want to make a decision ?

Hi! I'd firstly check college will let you take time off in term time at all! I work at a primary school and know there's no way I'd be allowed a couple of weeks off. I'd say in terms of children getting time off it depends more on the parents than the school. Generally children are allowed a certain amount of authorised days off a year with the written consent of the head - most would consider a wedding an acceptable reason. The only time our head doesn't allow it is SATs time but in autumn you'd be fine. It's more whether your guests would be OK pulling their kids out. Is your venue booked for the full half term week or could you say go for the Wed instead of Thurs?

As for holidays, only you guys know how long you can go without a break! Before I was a teacher, I could do a good long run without any time off work but in this job I'm dead when I get to the hols! I'm not sure how your college hols work - would you still be off in holiday time or would you have to be in doing admin? If you can still be off then I'd let OH choose because then he'll have less holiday time in general.

    Good luck choosing!

PS the only other term time midweek wedding consideration is if any of your friends are teachers. I wasn't allowed to go to my friend's wedding even though it was only an INSET day! But it depends on the head (and whether your friends are comfortable asking for that time off)

Thank you snow-woman Smiley smile I'm not term time I'm full time so am allowed to take time off during term time. (I'm not teaching staff). However I think they might be a bit wary of me taking all the time when students are in, holidays are preferred when it comes to booking time off even though technically we don't have to. The only time that we can't take time off is September due to enrolments. In terms of holidays, my partner and I get 5 weeks off during the year, so I think I'd personally prefer to spread this out more...like you I need to have the breaks lol!

I haven't got any friends who are teachers, but I am planning to invite some of my colleagues who are non teaching staff. It's mainly my niece and nephew I was concerned about. They live in a different county to us and their half term is the week before ours. So my original thought was to get married on the Thursday during their half term and then us go away that weekend, meaning the first week of our honeymoon would be during the college half term. But I've checked and that whole week is already booked (other must have had the same idea!).

So, another option is to get married during the college half term week, take the first week of the term off and then go away for our full honeymoon perhaps over Easter 2014?

I work in a primary school and we got married at the end of an October half term , so had to go straight back to work the following Monday.

Normally no holidays can be taken during term time but as it was a special occasion I was allowed to take a week off in February for our honeymoon in Vegas.

I wouldn't take my child out of school to attend a wedding, and some schools have a zero tolerance policy on absence except for illness/bereavement. You need to talk to the parents of your niece/nephew before making a decision if you want them to be able to come.

Yes I did speak to my sister in law to be about it first. We were trying for the half term but the venue couldn't do this, so I asked if they could offer any of the more 'out of season' weekends at the mid week price. And last night we got some good news....they have! So we have proviso ally booked a date....yippee!

We have also decided to go for the option of going away for a short break after the wedding and then going away for our full honeymoon about 6 weeks later ?
