Terrified newbie - hello!

Loz85, 29 April, 2013 at 12:37 Posted on Planning 0 29

Hi, I'm Laura. H2B proposed a few weeks ago on holiday and now the mad excitement has worn off I'm a bit terrified about the amount of work it's going to take to plan a wedding on a small budget! We're hoping to get married next July as his brother is coming over from America for a month but suddenly a year and a bit doesn't seem like that long....!

Hoping to find some inspiration and help here, so long as you don't mind me occasionally flipping out and panicking!! Smiley laugh

Hi, welcome and huge congrats on your engagement.

Over a year is plenty of time, it might not seem it but once you get all your list together you will see its easy (ish) to spread it out over the months.

I started with 12 months to go and have got so much done already, really surprised myself. You have a date so thats brilliant, just need a venue and then it all kinda falls into place.

Flipping out and panicking .... thats the norm ha. Good luck with the planning and enjoy it.

I'm relatively new too. I got engaged a month ago and wedding is 28th December 2013. I panicked at the start and thought it was daunting. Its great to hear other brides ideas and advice. I love to see the wedding dress 'flash' pics and all the homemade decorations. You will be fine.x

    Hi,

Congratulations to you both! I got engaged last month and we have booked our wedding for next April, it does seem like there's lots to do, but once you have your main venue booked the rest will fall into place. Enjoy it and don't worry.

Welcome ? another July 2014 bride here!! We've been planning since last March, but I definitely think just over a year is do-able as I've spaced everything WAY out and took breaks from the planning, as I'm just finishing off a degree. First thing is to book venue and then most people book a photographer after that as good ones can become booked up quite quickly.

Aw, you've got YONKS (does anyone even *use* that word any more??!) to get sorted

Anything over 12 months is a waste, in my book. You wouldn't want it to get boring.... (she said, and laughed hysterically until she cried.)

Seriously, it will be fine. Great, in fact. ?

    Congratulations!!!! :-D

I cannot imagine how excited, yet nervous, you must feel! So lovely that it's going to be when his brother is over :-)

A wedding isn't a long time, but you can do it! A lot of my couples got married within a year of getting engaged so it's definitely possible! x
Everyone on here is so lovely, so feel free to flip out and panic! I'm sure many know exactly how you feel!

LOVE this word - totally underused in my opinion!!

And Loz85 - congratulations and don't worry that's plenty of time!! We've been planning since March (get married next may) and now we've got the big things sorted, there's even a bit of a lull at the moment til we have to start thinking about the rest. We're just going to amble along until late summer and then pick up the planning again with enthusiasm!!!

Hi and welcome! As everyone's said you've plenty of time, I'd recommend having a good chat with your OH about what's important to you both about the day - church or not, location, type of venue, food, music etc

And occasional flipping out and panicking is practically mandatory!!

Hello and welcome. Lists are always a good way to stop panic. Plus once you get the biggest things done there will be a time when you will be looking for things to do

Hello and welcome along. A year is plenty of time, I would start looking at venues and photographers fairly quickly if you are wanting a weekend wedding as they book up a good year in advance. Panicking and the odd bridezilla meltdown is all part of the process. I just had a dream about an alien invasion starting halfway through my vows- that definitely has made me wake up panicked! :-)

    Hello!

I was also very daunted - I had exactly a year as the proposal was on our 9th anniversary and we wanted to get married on our 10th! A year is more than enough - we know another couple who got engaged months after us and yet they are getting married only two weeks after us and already had their invites out at the same time as we did.

For us, once we had a mad weekend of celebrations, we got the big stuff sorted fairly soon so that we could relax about that and have enjoyed doing the rest at a fairly leisurely pace. I am making a lot of stuff by hand even though I don't really have any talent in that direction (just because it's fun and so my stuff looks different) and in this period we have also moved house (and decorated / furnished the new place) plus I'm completing a PGCE and running my business, so it's amazing what can be done.

What's the quote - something like 'If you need something doing, ask a busy woman!'? You can do it - relax and enjoy! ?

I was thinking about this thread on the way in to work this morning....

We had 9 months. Then we put my house back on the market, then OH moved in to my house, then Christmas, then we let his house out, then we got a buyer for mine, then we found a house, then we got a new little dog that needed a home, then we had to start legal proceedings against an old ex to get conveyancing documents signed, then we were forced to agree to move out of my house with no house to go to, then we completed the legal proceedings and sold my house, then we put 90% of our stuff in to storage and moved in to a holiday let, then we went on holiday to America for ten days, whilst there we signed final documents and had big battles with solicitors and mortgage companies, then we came back and the next day we moved in to the new house. That happened 20 days ago.

For 2 of our 9 months we couldn't do anything, I am SO pleased I went wedding-crazy early on and booked up all kinds of stuff and spent dozens of hours finding just the right veil, cupcake toppers, shoes etc etc etc. Because nothing fell apart for that time and now I'm back in the game!

So a year, in my view, is the perfect length of time. Perfect ?

    Woah Kentishgal, that sounds manic!

Trying to make lists and collar h2b into actually helping me make some basic decisions about what we want to do. He's sort of a "yeah, whatever" kind of guy which is great in one way (I may just choose what I want and rely on a vague positive answer!) but is reallllly annoying when I just want honest feedback from him...

I think we're going to stay local and we both agreed it's more important to us to spend more on the honeymoon than on little details to do with the actual wedding Smiley winking so our plan so far is:

    - find a ceremony/reception venue that we both like that has availability in July next year (I'd really like to just have it all in one place, is that unrealistic?)

    - pick a honeymoon destination and work out how much of the budget we can afford to use for it

    - WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING!!! (that's the important bit, right?)

    - uhh, other stuff... Lol.

Hi, Also a newbie to Hitched with 1 year to go!!

We got engaged in December, started to look at Venues around the end on Jan, struggled to find one we loved, that was available, and within budget!

But last month we finally found it and booked for May 2014!!

I didnt want to start planning anything else until we had the venue, so now the fun really begins ?

    xx
