I'm pretty sure some hitchers are from texas so am hoping they'll be able to help (or anyone else who has visited there)! We've been pondering over a few places to go on holiday and the latest idea is Texas. Its never crossed my mind before but H has been before when he was younger and loved it. Anywhere else we've been I've had a general idea about it, but really know nothing about Texas. I think the general area we're thinking is houston, san antonio, south padre island, galveston. Any info would be fab! ?

We went to visit a friend in Houston for a few days and found enough to do, but it's not really my idea of a holiday if I'm honest - I certainly wouldn't choose to go there on holiday

Hi Im one of the hitchers that lives in Houston, Tx.

I always say to people its a great place to live but not really a holiday destination. My sister is coming to visit me next week and Im really struggling to think of things to do with her.

The shopping in Houston is great, the museums are good, there are lovely parks and places like that. Galveston I have been to, but it was before the hurricane, and I havent been since. I know its not 100% back up and running, but not sure what it will be live to visit. San Antonio is a popular place, we have been to Seaworld there, and to the Riverwalk/Boardwalk, which was only ok (in my opinion). San Padre Island I havent been to but my Inlaws have and they said it was lovely.

I think if you came to the area, and moved about abit, you could find lots of great things to do. I have spent a few days in Fredricksberg (2ish hours from Houston) and Salado (about the same in a slightly different dirction. Both are quant little towns, with lots of character and speciality shops, lots of vintage and antique things. Glen Rose is a bit further north, and there is a wildlife park there wwhich was pretty cool, and some dinasaur remains at the dinausaur park nearby.

I know Peaches has visited some different parts of the area so hopeful she will come along and advise. I love living here, but I really struggle to recommend it as a holiday destination..unless you are loaded, then the Galleria shopping is great!

If you are planning to go to South Padre Island make sure it's not spring break, that's all I can say.

I used to live about an hour from El Paso and can say that it's not worth visiting.

I also lived in Texas, and still have a house near Amarillo in the North. I have to disagree, I like going to Texas.

I took my OH on a trip around Southern Texas and we really enjoyed it, but I think it depends on what type of things you like. Don't forget that Texas is a huge state, probably nearly 1000 miles from top to bottom in parts.

There are plenty of things to see. We started in Dallas, headed to Houston (only spent a couple of days), then to Galveston, then Corpus Christi (I love it there, nice beaches and a few good things to see - my OH loved the USS Lexington) then down to South Padre and I think we then went back to San Antonio before driving up to Amarillo.

You could always do a two centre, a week in Texas and then go somewhere else. There are cruise ships running out of Galveston or it is easy to take a flight somewhere else in the US.

I do think though that Texas as a state is very different in parts, so whilst some parts may not be that great for a holiday (or even to live) it probably doesn't reflect Texas as a state if you have only been to one place. If that makes sense.

Thanks so much for all the replies. Was a bit worried when everyone said they wouldn't really go there, but I know what you mean, texasgirl, there's so much to it. H loved it the time they went. Looking at flights now, the exchange rate is making everything so expensive... Will let you know how we get on, thanks for all the advice!
