Thailand experts?

Mrs_imp, 15 November, 2011 at 15:24 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 7

We are currently re-thinking our honeymoon due to cost and rainy seasons etc and we are thinking of going to Thailand. We have been advised that December is a great time of year to go to Thailand and the weather should be pretty good. We have been advised to go to Bangkok for a few days and then onto an Island.

I am just after a bit of advice from people that have been recently, i went years ago and I'm sure things have changed. So...

Where would you go?

Where would you stay?

How much do you think it'll cost?

Any other advice?

    Hi Pixie,

My Son and Daughter both live in Thailand. My Son lives on the 'full moon' Island of Koh Phangan. It is a small Island near the Island of Koh Samui. I would recommend Koh Samui for your holiday, as it is about the same size as Ibiza, absoutley stunning beaches etc etc. My Daughter has a house in Koh Samui -which she rents out - it is stunning!!! - maybe good for the honeymoon home Smiley smile.

Bangkok is well worth seeing, for a few days then flying out to another part. Prices can be very reasonable. A lot cheaper than Ibiza!! Have a look at one of my Son's websites: www.kohsamui-saps.com It may help you to get a feel of the place. Thailand is a place to travel, to see as much as possible, it can be done really cheaply, it can also cost European prices. Yes December 'peak season' so is a good time to go. I have visited many times usually November/December/January time. Although I have been in April in what is known as 'rainy season' it is still warm, but lots of steamy rain!!

I hope some of this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions about the place as it is difficult to generalize.

    Eileen

Pixeee - we went for our honeymoon in September 2010.

We flew into Bangkok, got a flight to Koh Samui & stayed there at Rocky's Boutique in Lamai for 7 nights (gorgeous hotel) we then flew back to Bangkok and got a private road transfer to Hua Hin & stayed at The Rest Detail for 4 nights. Back on the road then Bangkok for 3 nights staying at The Royal Orchid Sheraton.

All in, it was under £3k. This was with room upgrades, free meals, free massages, private transfer & access to the airport lounge through Kuoni.

It is dead cheap to eat out there - eat the street food. It is amazing & cheap. You can have a sit down meal for two including alcohol for less than £10 in some places.

I'd definitely recommend staying at Rocky's in Koh Samui. I wasn't a big fan of Hua Hin, but loved KS & Bangkok was v interesting with the temples etc. I'd stay on the river in Bangkok & you can get river taxis (sometimes laid on by the hotels).

The restaurant at the Sheraton we stayed at in BKK has the most amazing food. Rick Stein ate there & featured it on his Far Eastern Odyssey programme.

    Thanks both!

Eileen: I'll look at that website, thanks.

Spangler: Sorry a few questions for you, if you don't mind?

We've actually been quoted for this hotel and like the look of it, is it easy enough to get out on Samui from this hotel?

    Thanks!

Wasn't a huge fan of Hua Hin as there wasn't as much to do there. The hotel was absolutely amazing (jacuzzi on the balcony - lovely rooms) but the surrounding area wasn't as good. The night market there is really good though (food wise). We went because of Rick Stein!

Rocky's puts on a free shuttle to and from Lamai (the closest town) every day. They also do a free shuttle to Chaweng (bigger town) but no return bus.

I'd also say to only go room only/ B&B. Food is so cheap in Thailand it would be daft to restrict yourself to just the hotel. The restaurant at Rocky's is really good. There is a restaurant further down the road, if you turn right outside the hotel called Sabinglae. All of the locals go there. Very basic tables, plastic chairs, but the food is awesome. Amazing seafood & nice cold beers!

Shout if you need anything else.
