I don't know what the best one is but we stayed in the Malmaison a few months ago and it was lovely. Stayed in their cinema suite and thought it was amazing - but we're not used to staying in nice hotels so we're maybe easily impressed Smiley smile

I can't really compare it to anything else, as its the only posh hotel I have ever stayed at, but I would say The Lowry.

We had a great stay there.

Although, if I were to be a little pedantic, I would say that the Lowry, whilst in the city centre, it is actually in Salford, rather than Manchester. ? Its only just in Salford though as I think the border is the river/canal on which it is next to. Its only a short walk to the shops.

It is in the different place to the Lowry Theatre though, which, IMHO is impossible to find in the car... but that is a whole different thread!

We stayed in The Midland in Manchester last year. We had a suite and we thought it was lovely, our room was massive and I couldn't fault anything.

I've a soft spot for this one, but don't know what it's like to stay there now, but it looks as fab as ever.

I spotted the Refuge Assurance building in my freshers week and thought it was really sad that it was all boarded up and forlorn. By the time I graduated, someone else had obviously decided it was a waste too, and refurbished into a lovely hotel - my dad stayed there in my final year *cough* some considerable time ago now.

It looks like it's changed hands (certainly changed names )

It's gorgeous inside. And a very short walk to theatres and city cenre etc

I'm afraid I have to disagree with Mel_ODrama - the Palace, whilst a fabulous building with a very nice foyer is grim in the bedroom stakes - really not that great at all and many of the rooms in need of a lot of paint, decoration and modernisation....

Does it have to be city centre? Me and H treated ourselves to a night here a while ago - fabulous and Didsbury good fun too (only about 20 minutes from city centre)

The Palace underwent a complete refurb a couple of years ago so the rooms should be fine (they were in my experience). That said, the whole place feels a little too much like a Victorian asylum - I don't think it's really top of the tree. Radisson is good and very convenient location.

Depending on whether you preferred a boutique or luxury chain I would say Great St John or the Radisson respectively. Both very centrally located and excellent facilities. If you wanted a spa I would go with the Radisson but overall the Great St John would pip it for me. Fantastic rooms and as it is so small it has a much more intimate atmosphere with fantastic service. Here’s the website.

    Good luck.
