The Cheek Of It!

This morning I saw a CCTV car recording images of a van parked on a single yellow line. The CCTV car had pulled up behind the van but was on DOUBLE YELLOW lines!

Luckily I had my camera to hand so I whipped it out and took a picture. I've written to the council but haven't mentioned that I have a picture. Will wait and see what their response is. Email below:

Dear Sir / Madam I write to ask whether your CCTV vehicles are subject to different rules from the average motorist. This morning at approximately 8.30am, on my way into work I saw one of your cars, vehicle registration KP08 XXX parked on double yellow lines on Fulbourne Road. It was in the act of recording another vehicle, registration CE56 XXX which had pulled over on a single yellow line. Surely the CCTV vehicle was committing a greater offence than the one it was policing? I would be grateful if you could advise which rules govern these vehicles that make them different to other road users. Furthermore, I note that Winsbeach and Fernhill Court regularly have a CCTV car in place to catch vehicles turning left off Forest Road during restricted hours. While I accept that there should be a visible deterrent I fail to understand why it's still in place so long after the banned turn came into effect. Secondly there are always two people in the vehicle. I would like to know why two persons are required to man the vehicle and what the cost to the taxpayer is. How much do I pay for 2 people apparently doing nothing, in a car that is automatically recording? I look forward to hearing from you.

I have heard that as they are trying to catch motorists breaking traffic law, they are able to park on double yellows, although not sure if it's true. If it is, it strikes of "do as I tell you, don't do as I do."

I have been cut up on numerous occasions by CCTV cars, who also seem to forget what their indicator is for. I wonder what reply you'll get.

Hi Sam, thanks for taking the time to reply. I can see what you say does make sense, but it all just seems so sneaky and underhand. The way I see it, the lines are there for a reason. If a motorist is parked illegally why is it ok for the enforcement vehicle to park there? Surely they're both causing the same obtruction? Re having two people in the smart car, it's just parked up. They don't get out and issue tickets, just sit there while the camera records. I fail to see why one man can't do the job with the doors locked. If he felt threatened he could easily drive off? I'm not having a go at you, just trying to figure it out.

That's my thought exactly. It just seems wrong if that is the case.

But it would be no good having the cctv van parked in an ncp round the corner would it? He wouldn't be surveilance if he was unable to see the situation surely?
