The disgusting A & E Story

AmnesiaCustard, 10 April, 2013 at 10:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 49

Separately posted so you can avoid it if you wish.

As witnessed first hand by a trustworthy source (ie not me!)

Father brings child of about 2 years old intio A & E with breathing difficuklties. Doctor notices that child has VERY snotty, bunged up, bogey-laden nose and asks father if he can clean nose before she examines child.

Fathe puts his own mouth around child's nostrils and SUCKS HARD to clear nose.

I think it is the element of choice that makes it worse...my Dr friend said she is less revolted by things that people have no control over.

I've seen this fairly routinely, far better than sticking tissue or cotton buds up a baby's nose. Members of my family do it. Don't get me wrong, it makes me feel a bit queasy, but I wouldn't be surprised by the action.

For those who don't know, I work in an eye research group. I appreciate that many people have strong feelings about eyes so I won't post pics here.

I don't see patients when they arrive at clinics but I see reports in meetings etc. And we've been told by journals to remove pictures from papers, because they are unnecessarily gruesome. And we are constantly regaled with tales of parasitic worm/fishing hook removals...

If anyone is feeling brave, they can see a picture in a recent paper from our group here:

It's a patient who has something called "brittle cornea syndrome". This means that the outside layer of their eye is incredibly weak, which makes them very vulnerable to explosive injury. This girl, as I recall, suffered a glancing blow during a play fight and her eye, well, exploded. That stuff is the inside coming out.

If we can identify those at risk early enough, we can fit them out with protective goggles to wear.

I think this is interesting. And she couldn't help it so think I am probably in the "it's worse if you choose it" camp.

Although I am squeamish about eyes and don't even have contact lenses!

I must admit the eye thing didn't bother me that much!

*Note to self - teach any child I may bear to blow their nose as early as possible. No way am I ever sucking snot out of their nostrils.

Young kids just can't blow out their nose. All the little 'uns I've seen with objects they've stuck up their nose (peas, bits of Lego etc), you tell them to blow to try and get it out and they just sniff!

Like 4 and under. I've no idea what age they learn to blow their nose instead of sniff.

So what do people propose to do when their six month old has a blocked nose and is unable to feed? Or is suffering breathing difficulties?

You can buy nasal aspirators at Boots - is it an option to do it without your mouth?

I suction noses, mouth and trachys all the time at work, with suction a catheter obviously. But yes you can buy manual home versions from Boots.

I am SO thankful my 22 month old can blow his own nose... My 5.5yr old SS struggles with this task, and regularly gets a mouthful of his own snot ?
