The Finale

Sandysounds, 31 August, 2009 at 12:13 Posted on Planning 0 12

I love doing finales and wondered if anyone had thought how they would like their evening to end. I hate to see such a significant day fizzle out at the end and think a well thought out finale, whether it be on a high or a slowie sticks in people's minds. Here's one that sticks in my mind.

Last 20 minutesof high energy music such as Queen - don't stop me now, Hermes house band - country roads, Shamrocks - Tell me Ma (I'm in NI remember)....there are loads more alternatives. Tell me ma tends to create a natural circle so B+G could be in the middle. Then we went into we will rock you with all the quests in the circle clapping their hands. B+G final song was time of my life whereby they had time to go round the circle saying goodbye to their friends and family and an archway was formed to the door.

That might not be to everyone's taste, but there are loads of alternatives. I've done some lovely tearjerker ones that have finished on slowies. I wondered how you guys were thinking of finishing your day.

Funnily enough we were talking about this yesterday. We were going to do the going round the circle saying bye to evryone but when we thought about it we've never known a couple to make it all the way round before. So instead we are having this, so long as our DJ can get it into the right format, and just dance in the middle of the circle.

I've already decided that "Time of my Life" will be our last song, but I do quite like the idea of more of a finale type thing... think I'll talk to my DJ about that!

Tricks of the trade!!!! If you want a song to last the duration for going round a circle there is a way of using a mixing programme to extend the song by repeating a verse in the middle and if done well, is absolutely seamless. I've just completed a first dance that needed a verse taking out because it was too long.

It's not so much that the song isn't long enough, more that it takes too long for people to get round and the circle tends to disband a bit before the end.

I just heard the Monty Python "Always look on the bright side of life" on the radio and immediately thought of this post!

I know there is one verse about death but it is a real good sing a long number!

Our finale was fab and everyone was on the dance floor. We had Scottish dancing throughout the night which the English guests loved and no-one apart from the oldies really knew what was going on - alcohol might have been the cause of this.

So the last few songs we had were 500 miles (Proclaimers), Loch Lomond and Auld Lang Syne with the usual dance to this and the bridal party in the middle. Everyone crosses and links arms and moves towards us and ends up basically a rammy of people all dancing about and singing along. Oh and H and I got lifted up and chucked about a bit too.

I wish the vid man had stayed to get this on camera as I would have loved to see how it looked.

We had never forget, new york new york and loch lomond (ours was a scottish wedding too, cheska!) - people naturally formed into a circle for the last 2 especially - danced in the middle for NYNY, but joined in the stramash for loch lomond! such fun....!

Now many people may think this is a bit odd for a wedding but out last song is going to be...

... Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?

It's non-traditional to have that sort of message at a wedding, but for us it means recognising we shouldn't take advantage of each other. It also has huge significance for us and our friends, because whenever we have a drunken get together with the guitar, this is the song we ALL sing together. As soon as it comes on, they'll all know that even if we haven't spoken to them we still love them! And they'll all get up and sing in a rowdy bunch and know it's time to go home. Multi-functional song ;-).

I love the Shirelles original version, but it's a little upbeat and a bit too short. Amy Winehouse is a bit moany. The search continues.

I use Loch lomond when there's a strong Scottish contingent (which over here in NI is quite often).....and yes......it def gets the crowd going. Putting Tell me Ma back to back with Loch lomond is sure to raise the roof!

I'm another one who had Loch Lomond, wouldn't have had anything else! Before that we had 500 Miles by the Proclaimers. H is English and so all his friends and relatives were rather bemused at the end of the night. They did all say it was great and that they'd never seen anything like it before.
