The Great Cake Bake

moonpie1985, 18 July, 2011 at 22:22 Posted on Planning 0 16

I have been watching this a lot the past few days as there hasn't been many other wedding related programs to keep me entertained.

I am not a 'cake' person and do not really like the stuff, so assumed I would just do the cheap thing and get one from M&S.

But now I am inspired and I don't care that I don't like cake, I just want a pretty sculpture.

Lots of monies though.

Then I asked the OH what kind of cake he likes, and he said 'any, so long as it's square'.! Well - I don't want a square one.

I think I might need to put my foot down, as I am just not sold on the whole square cake style.

Tell me ladies (and AJ) - do you prefer Square or Round?

And 2 tiers or 3?

    Profiteroles ?

If I was going for a traditional cake, I would probably go for a round one. The square ones look quite good if the middle tier is angled as a diamond....

Will be sticking with the profiteroles I think though. ?

We absolutly love profiteroles! Will a normal wedding cake supplier do a profiterol tower - and what do they end up looking like? (eg- can they be decorated?)

One that size would be - but it doesn't hurt to try and get a quote from local patissiers/bakers

They are just amazing aren't they. I love profiteroles and thought one of these would be a great option to try and serve 150+ guests. 1 each for them and the rest for me ?

I had a croquembouche and it was awesome, nowhere near as big as the one in the pic tho as it was only for 17 people and it doubled up as desert with dark chocolate sauce and fresh berries nomnomnom!

Back to the OP I think round too, dont know why just not a big fan of square, i am making my sisters cake and am doing a round 3 tier cake whoch will hopefully look lovely!?!

I'm firmly in the square camp - but only with really sharp edges.

OH doesn't give a toss as long as it's not fruit.

I haven't sorted the cake yet but I imagine we'll be going with a 4 tier, square lemon cake. We have 140 day guests so need an extra tier.

I am making a friends wedding cake next year and shes requested round, however i suggested designs which now i look at it, they were all square!! I have no preference, at least i didnt think i did!

Mr F is totally in charge of the cake so knowing him wel have a racing car/animal/computer game character (delete where applicable) shaped cake!!!!!!

We're having a 3 tier round cake, I'm not keen on the square ones but I couldn't give you a reason why! Just personal preference I guess!

We haven't decided on ours yet but their are so many fantastic alternatives, macaroon tower, the profiteroles, and a tower of lemon meringue pies was a fab idea off that show.

I think a tower of cupcakes are great, with a cutting cake on top, you could request a square stand ?

I thought ours would be hexagonal, but i think it's now square at offset angles. It's going to look awesome - OH is in charge of the decorations. We want them to match his buttonholes.
