The little things.........?

Laurensmum, 15 June, 2016 at 21:42 Posted on Planning 0 11

Evening all...

I am totally and utterly stressing about what height shoes to wear on the big day. When I first tried my dress on I was in shop shoes, I guestimate at around 2.5-3inchs. With these shoes on the length of the dress was perfect, the shop assistant said "Oooh well that's £150 off your alteration Bill straight away!" Fab, or so I thought!

My OH and I are both 5' 9 and I am very worried that I will look ridiculous towering over him on the day in my heels, but could really do without the extra cost of getting the dress taken up (it would be round about £300 with the hem)

Should I get over myself and just wear the heels on the chance that I will probably be about 2 inches taller on the day, or fork out the £150 for the sake of being more comfortable about the height issue on the day?

Are there any other brides to be/OM's that are taller than their partners and was it an issue for you?

Thanks for any advice ?

I'll be totally honest and say if it was me, I'd be forking out the £300.... I just wouldn't want to appear that much taller than my groom! I think it would be different if you were 5'9 and he was 5'6 - then, no matter what you ARE taller and there's nothing you can do about that!

As you are the same height, then unless you routinely wear heels and are taller than him and you're both happy with that, I'd be going for the alterations and flats!

How does H2B feel about it? I know mine would say he didn't mind.... but actually he would!

I'm of an age where my hips don't like heels lol so would be having it taken up lol.

Assuming you will be wearing it all day I say comfort is a big consideration. For that reason alone I would pay for alteration too. X

I am very lucky in that respect as I will be wearing a 2" heel but will only work out as 5'8" against my H2B's 6'5". Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable being taller than my OH and I think this would affect me in the photos as I'd probably stoop.

Maybe try a pair of shoes on and look at you and your OH in the mirror - if this bothers you, then I'd fork out for the alterations.

I need to consider this too because if my heels are too high then I will be taller than my H2B. I would fork out the money for the alterations because it's one of those things most men would notice! I know my H2B would definitely pick up on it if I was taller than him in photos!!

    Hi Lovely

I feel your pain! I'm 5'10" and FI is 6'0

I need 3" - 3.5" to save me from altering my gown (which I point blank refuse to do as the lace is so beautiful).

I took FI shoe shopping with me to solve this dilemma and made him wear his fancy shoes. They add about an inch in height for him.

On the Wedding Day, I reckon we'll be about the same height, but I'll have a tiara and veil so visually I will be taller.

My mum was taller than my Step Dad on their Wedding Day, and it didn't look 'wrong' - or not to me at least! See for yourself Smiley smile

Me and my H2B are also both 5"9" and I would (and am) absolutely fork out the money. I definitely dont want him to be shorter and I think it would effect my posture in photos etc. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a lot. I am just viewing alteration costs as included in the wedding dress price and trying not to think about it!

Just to say-I am a complete shorty and would have needed to wear 6inch heels to not need my dress hemming (no way would I be able to do that) and my dress has an awesome scalloped lace hem & train-but they unpick the hem, take up the lace, then replace the scalloped edge-as it is sewn on separately iykwim (I had read this before appt, but didn't believe it as I could NOT see the join at all!)

So if the only thing stopping you is the thought of losing the lace-don't worry Smiley smile

Oh and your alterations seem quite pricey OP - I paid £135 for hemming, bustle, fixing a few bits and pieces, taking shoulders in and adding bra cups (they were £15 on their own) but I am aware prices vary a lot for this-it was an independent seamstress recommended by the bridal shop, I am in north essex.

I'm a little bit taller than my other half so will be wearing flats as although he likes heels and doesn't mind me being taller, i feel self-conscious of the height difference. Saying that though, our friends got married and she was taller than the groom and it didn't look odd in their photos at all. I guess it's what you are most comfortable with.

    Enjoy your shopping trip!!

I like being only 5ft tall! My partner is quite short for a bloke but he seems tall to me!

I am about an inch taller than my OH and i'm wearing 2.5inch heels on the day. He couldn't care less that I'm taller than him in my heels and he just wants me to feel the best I can on my wedding day. If I were you I'd wear the heels!
