The one thing I am really worrying about - please help...

Ulli, 1 November, 2012 at 15:03 Posted on Planning 0 23

I have a question I can't really ask anyone else (it's a bit weird and I don't think any of my friends would know to be honest), but I am sure you can help me with your expertise...

I am very close to buying my dress. It is a fishtail gown and I just adore it, keep thinking about it! I have one concern though: how do I solve the toilet problem? Surely once a fishtail is fitted properly you can't - ahem - just pull it up? I am aware that the toilet issue is a concern for most brides no matter which shape their wedding dress, but an A-line or princess will not be stuck on the hips, right... Basically at the moment when trying it on, I am stepping into the dress to get it on and I assume that's what I'll do on the wedding day. Taking the whole dress off every time I go to the bathroom is not really an option though as I don't have a private room or so at our venue...

Hope my description of the problem makes sense and someone can help me with this slightly delicate matter ?

You need a bridesmaid and a disabled toilet so more space

She can just help you peel it up, you pee, then she helps pull it back down again.

    Simples

Hm, kirstabubble, while I am sure that works with a fuller skirted dress I am not so sure that is possible with a fishtail. It really comes in at the thighs, so I doubt I will be able to peel it up over the hips if that makes sense...

its possible, my bestie had a fishtail dress and it fitted very snuggly, and what kirstabubble said is exactly what we did, you shimmy it up and shimmy it back down again, simple! its really not as complicated as you think!

This! I had a practice lifting mine up, sitting in it and throwing a few shapes. The wedding shop assistant was most impressed !

I have bought a fishtail dress but as mine is zip and not laced up it will be so easy to just un-do and remove and then do back up again.

Is yours lace up? As others have said maybe you need to practice shimmying? hehe.

I'm talking from experience. My friends dress was super tight, and even after a few glasses loads of wine, we managed just fine.

If it's so tight you can't go to the toilet then you won't be able to walk/dance in it either. The shop will make sure it's fitted properly so that it looks right but without restricting you too much.

Have you got a picture of the dress? We all love a good flash.

I have tried sitting down and that works. Taking it off is really not an option, there will be no private room with bathroom where I can go and the cubicles won't be big either (we are getting married in a Cambridge College, so it is all quite old really and obviously the main purpose is not hosting weddings and providing bathrooms for wedding dresses, lol. Gorgeous venue, but not the most practical in that respect.).

I am going back to the shop this Saturday so will ask and try it out. They have the sample on sale and even though I always said I wouldn't want a sample dress this one was in impeccable condition when I last saw it two weeks ago, so I might buy that one (especially considering we also have a civil ceremony in Germany and I will have another dress for that, so I need to do some maths regarding how much I spend). In fact I was going to go back to the shop last Saturday to erase last doubts (at that point there was another dress still in the running) but never got there as I very, very nearly got involved in a bad accident on the motorway. It was the kind of accident after which police tells you that you might have been killed or you might have killed someone if you had reacted a second later and it left me very shaken. Once I could think about dresses again I was worrying that I would be reminded of the accident if I went for that dress, because I would not have been there on the motorway if it wasn't for the dress. But then I kept catching myself daydreaming about the dress and me wearing it on the wedding day, the other dress was forgotten... So I take this as a sign that it really is the one for me because even that horrible, horrible incident couldn't put me off it! So, long story short, sorry about that, I am going back on Saturday and if it still feels right I will buy it.

Here is a flash of me wearing it (it is the frontal picture I also have pictures of the back and from the side if anyone requests it). I really would like lace trimmings on the hem, this is another thing I will need to talk about on Saturday in the shop.

It is a beautiful dress Ulli and looks stunning on you. I don't think it is as tight as you think it is. The fishtail starts above the knee and there appears to be some space above it (I guess so you can walk). Do give it a try but I think it is doable. My friend had a very similar dress and went to the toilet alone all night, no help needed. On the plus side, at least you don't have acres of material to gather up and avoid peeing on.

Just think of it as a long pencil skirt, looks like you should be able to shimmy it up and down, just get your most trusted closest friend (and probably by the end of the evening the most sober one, nothing worse than a dibilitating fit of giggles when trying to pee) to help.

Also, you may find you hardly need to go, most brides get so dehydrated...

And by the way, it looks stunning, can see why you feel in love with it. Gorgeous.

Aww, thank you ladies, that means a lot that you all like the dress (I posted a couple of weeks ago about a different dress that was the favourite at the time and got mixed reviews that basically echoed my own doubts - the day after I found this dress and no doubts whatsoever...). Will try the peeling up bit tomorrow when I will be in the shop to buy (!!!) it (well, as I said before if it still feels right after that incident last week I will buy it). The aiming from a height thing is a bit too risky polarbex, but after sleeping on the whole situation I think I will have to make the toilet thing work as this is no reason not to go for the dress I love! Smiley smile

I think you will be fine. Practice your shimmying and get a BM to practice with you.

    If not, buy a funnel?

BEAUTIFUL dress, and I agree with everyone else, looks very easy to shimmy up and shimmy down again even in a small toilet space Smiley smile

Hold Ups will also help with the shimmying I would reckon ?

Would wearing a hoop help? or would that be more of a hinderance?

Well, you wise ladies were completely right, the peeling up thing does work - I bought the dress today (had to post it straight away, so there is another post from me). Thank you so much for your advice and reassurance!
