The word "basically"

bobbly1, 21 July, 2008 at 21:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 36

The other day someone at work was on the phone and must have used the word "basically" about 10 times in the conversation.

Since then I have noticed the word being used in general conversation a lot.

Tonight I was listening to the radio, and a caller used the word about every 5th word! - It's beginning to get on my nerves now!

Anyone else notice the overuse of this word - or any others?

Aww, that's good of him. Apparently my "catchphrase" is "you silly arse" (said in a nice friendly way) I didn't realise I said it so much until both friends and people at work mentioned that I never swear except to say "you silly arse". I have tried to stop!

That doesn't annoy me as much as 'Dave and I' when it should be 'Dave and me.'?

How do you, like, differentiate, like, between, like, Dave and me, and like, Dave and I, or like, me and Dave, like. You know what I mean like?

I once worked for someone who said to another member of staff... "If you say 'basically' once more before 5 o' clock today, you're out the he door"

    He did... And he was.

My new colleague ends every sentence with 'ok'. Two weeks in and he's doing my head in, ok?

It's funny how you pick up on words/phrases and then seem to hear them all the time.

I know I sometimes say 'basically' too much, especially when I'm nervous doing a presentation or something!

My boss says 'there's that' far too often. For instance when deciding what to talk about in a meeting he'll keep saying it!

On the radio & in conversation lately I've noticed the phrase 'the elephant in the room' being used a lot lately!

There's a bloke in my office who uses "basically" in the first sentence of every phone query he handles. It's like breaking the seal- once he's said it once he seems unable to stop saying it with increasing frequency until the call ends in a crescendo of them, basically.

His line manager and line manager's manager are happy to snipe and even mimick him behind his back, but neither of them seem willing to tell the poor buggar and do something about it. Mind you, he stinks the office out as well and they won't tackle him about that either <sob> Whiff-a-rama

    Another 'basically' abuser here. Sorry.

And 'actually', though less than I used to. As a teenager 'actually' started every sentence ?

Back in the dark ages when I was at school there was a word over used and used incorrectly every time by 'the chavs' and I can't for the life of me remember what it is!!!! I think it might have been 'literally'.

OHs boss says 'yeah?' at the end of each sentence when drunk and doesn't continue with what he is saying until you have agreed! Unfortunately not agreeing with him doesn't shut him up, he just continues saying 'yeah?' at an ever increasing rate and volume until you agree!! Luckily he doesn't do it sober.

Basically is the new actually. My best friend uses basically ALL the time - I noticed it a month or so ago and I haven't pulled her up over it. She lives 200 miles away so although we email every day, we don't talk that often and thankfully she only basically's verbally!! ?

'At the end of the day' must be in the top 5 over used phrases. I hear it all the time - I've heard it used at the beginning and the end of sentences (and sometimes both) and it's totally unnecessary. I have a theory that nothing of any worth has preceded or followed this phrase and I've yet to be proven wrong (unless someone is actually talking about something that happened at the end of the day, in which case it's acceptable!).

James O'Brien on LBC used to have a 'Basically Alarm', whenever a caller said the word Basically an alarm would go off.If the alarm went off 3 times they would get cut off the show. He doesn't seem to do it anymore, I don't know what happened but there were a lot of people cut off.

"Obviously" annoys me more than "basically", especially as it's mostly used by numpty sales/customer service bods. E.g. "Well we obviously can't do that." Err it isn't obvious, actually! You're only saying it to make me think it's a point I can't argue! The only thing that's obvious is that you're a numpty! Gah!

My eldest daughter uses this word all the time, we do take the mickey out of her but still she does it. In fact, she started when she was making up excuses on the phone as to why she hadn't returned from being out at the agreed time, so she'd start off by saying "Basically, right,..." and now we all say it to her just to wind her up but she still starts almost every sentence off like that!

The caller that irritated me was on LBC as well! - It was late yesterday afternoon. It does distract me from what the person is saying if they start off with the word "basically", as I am waiting for the next one, and not listening to the context of their conversation!!!

argh, it drives me round the bend,

people who say 'basically' and then give a full blown detailed explanation of something, well, that is not bloody basic you bell end!

And as for 'literally' arrrgh. " I literally shat myself" so, you actually poo'ed your pants then did you? tosser.

There is a tv cook that "literally" adds the butter, and "literally" adds the milk, etc, for each ingrediant, well, i did not think you were going to pretend to add them. gah

This, as you can tell, bothers me, like, you know, a lot

It didnt bother me much until I started my job 18 months ago.

    Me: "Emergency which service please?"

    Caller: "Baisically, yeh....."

? I think its more of a Londoner thing and me being Glasweigan, it drives me nuts!!

Another thing that drives me nuts (again another Londoner thing)

    Me: "Emergency which service please?"

Caller: "I need an ambulance INNIT??"

    WTF?? ?
