Theme Help?

kristin, 22 February, 2009 at 17:57 Posted on Planning 0 12

I'm really struggling for a theme idea for my wedding....

My fiancee and I fell in love with and booked a venue/caterer (June 2010), and we've decided to have a traditional English tea following the ceremony (instead of a wedding breakfast) followed by a disco and hot buffet in the evening. The crux of the problem is that the room is quite modern and bold (one of the walls is red) and while I really like it, I'm struggling to find an idea that reconciles a traditional afternoon tea with a such a modern room.

The room is also throwing off my ideas for colours - I love red, and certainly don't mind having it as my colour, but I feels like it would be too formal for an afternoon tea...?

Any ideas of how I can marry my venue with my tea? I would be ever so grateful for any suggestions!

Red is a fab colour for Afternoon tea theme, think about the colours of summer:

    Bowls of Strawberries

    Red Ginham Table Clothes

Strawberry Jam in tiny pots as favours

Using Ivory Enamel Jugs you could fill them with Tulips in Red & Cream

You could always add other flowers like sunflowers or cornflowers to give it more of a country-fied feel IYSWIM? you coud have red poppies or tulips?

look on websites such as projectwedding.com and stylemepretty.com to get picture inspiration. you could speak to your venue coordinator to see if she has done anything similar?

    Hi ya

Sher hit it perfectly, red is a great colour for a tea party and the first thing that springs to mind is red gingham table cloths.

I would also look into introducing other colours to make it really summery and fun such as purple/lavender, pinks and creams with greenery

I love the idea of the pots of jam that Sher said about the jams and you could use pink and lavender gingham ribbons to tie brown luggage tags onto for place names too?

If you're allowed see if you can use bunting in the room to give it a real garden party look. If you've got the time, you could make your own jam jar covers with the same material as the bunting? There are also companies such as www.vintagecrockerycompany.co.uk where you can hire vintage crockery to add to the look.

Also if the furniture in the room is too modern you can look to hire wooden chairs like the ones inthe picture with the bunting which are usually about £3-£3.50 each which can actually be cheaper than having chairs covers.

Thanks, Sherrie! I love those ideas! I'm not sure the room can pull of the red ginham, but I can definitely envision everything else! FYI - below's a photo of the room we've hired (though the wall looks a bit more orange than the red it actually is!)

Are the chair covers on the chairs going to on there on the day?

If they are you could tie Gingham ribbon around them in a Bow & place a Rose in the back of each chair or a sprig of Lavender.

I think it could work ify ou place Jugs with flowers in around the room, Squares of Gingham or even a floral square in the centre of the tables to bring a country feel to the room

If you are looking for china cupa and saucers for favours there seem to be lots in charity shops and its coming up to carboot season. They usually have lots and if you don't want them to match.

After seeing the decor photo, what about red and white (or black and white) (or even black an red) polka dot accents. It could still look informal and vintage tea party without looking chintzy or country rustic IYSWIM. It could give a 50's retro feel to the scheme which could follow through chair sashes, on the day stationery, invitations, crockery or centrepieces. It would work nicely with a sweet table too - polka dot ribbon and retro style tags attached to glass apothecary jars or bright sweets.
