Themes

Leanne1811, 17 August, 2014 at 21:41 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hi all this is my first post on here, and I'm asking for help lol.

how have you all decided on your themes? I've decided on my colours which are lavender/lilac and aqua/turquoise. But I'm really struggling with a theme ? I was thinking of incorporating one of my h2b's hobbies (golf or fishing) but my moh thinks it should be something that represents us both. But I don't know what (neither does she) we don't really have any common interests haha. I can see people now saying erm why are you getting married, we have been together 12years and have 4 children and are very much in love ? maybe that's why we get on so well lol.

So please any ideas or helpfully advice would be very much appreciated thank you ☺️

Sometime colours is all you need... If that! There are a few ladies on here who don't have colour schemes and are just going with the flow really.

We're having Cadbury purple and silver/ shiny greys and having butterflies on the stationary. Cake and so on.

You'll also get replies saying that a wedding is enough of a theme, less is more kind of thing.

Thanks for replying ?. I kinda like everything to tie in and match I just don't want things to look out of place, or things to look OTT if that makes sense.

I agree, you don't need an actual theme, but if you would like one take a look in the inspiration section here/pinterest/the knot and just collect pictures you love and see if a pattern appears Smiley smile

I've actually got a butterfly/rustic/vintage feel in mind, but it will depend on the venue in the end, cos if we go with a smarter venue then I might just go with simple and classic...

There isn't really much judgement on here, as far as I can tell. I've tried to think of something me and my H2B have in common to use as inspiration but the reason we get on isn't as simple as that, so I completely get it! Congratulations, btw, do you have a date/year/time of year in mind?

I don't think you necessarily need a theme. We're having Japanese influenced decorations e.g. cherry blossom, bonsai trees, origami, but this isn't to say everything about the day is Japanese. We are having quintessentially British food and a balkanese band so ours is a bit of a hotch potch of influences, but its all very 'us' and we like to think everything reflects our personalities.

I say go for what reflects you as individuals and a couple and don't worry about sticking to a theme. Could you have tables named after famous golf courses but also have fishing themed invitations? Or do away with hobbies altogether and just use your colours to guide you.

Yeah, I agree with the masses - no theme needed.

That said, I ended up having one. We had our wedding breakfast on a canal boat, and Paperchase were doing lots of anchor stationary earlier this year, so went with that. Found some anchor guest cards and place cards on Etsy and a lovely owl and pussycat cake topper. So if you really want a theme then perhaps the style of wedding might give you one: anchors for a boat, etc. My BIL recently got married in the woods and celebrated in a rural pub garden during the summer solstice, so his theme was rustic and pagan.

People that don't know us may think we had a 'theme' but if you knew us you would know that our wedding totally reflected how we live and dress.

    No theme needed.

One of my Mum's first questions was "what's your theme going to be", which quite took me by surprise.

We didn't pick a theme, but over the course of us choosing our decor, clothing, etc etc, which all reflects us, it has sort of evolved into a "style" rather than a "theme" which we are more than comfortable with. No one will notice it as a theme, but hopefully everyone will just see that we are happy, and it is all very "Us".

What I am saying, really is don't rush to pick a theme, perhaps just see how things fall into place, and if there is any sort of constant thread that runs through it in the early stages, you might want to develop it. Or you might not! Don't force the issue.

We don't have a theme, or a colour scheme for that matter, but I suppose one will emerge when we get the bridesmaids' dresses and then choose the flowers and whatever else to either match or complement them. The idea of having a theme scares me a bit, to be honest, because where do you stop?! I just know that I'd obsess about everything having to tie in with it.

We didn't have a theme, just a colour scheme. We just chose things we liked that fit in with the colours.

I've seen weddings that have no theme or colour scheme at all and they can look fab.

I didn't think we were having a theme. i always knew i wanted violets in my flower arrangements (it was my grandmothers wedding boquet because she got married in uniform and wasnt allowed a real one) so that was colour theme sorted but i've fallen in love with a cake (i'm ordering it next month) that is shaped like a birdcage and so now i'm looking at place cards/table cards/favour boxes/invites with birdcages...

Hi thanks for everybody's advice ☺️ I love the idea of the golf courses for table names. I've asked a couple of friends if they could sum me and h2b up in one word or sentence. They came up with crazy and happy I was hoping that would help with a theme or some inspiration lol.

Golf courses is a good one - we are having Ski slopes from places we have been to on holiday for our table names. We will have piste markers as our table centerpieces. H2B proposed to me while we were skiing, so it is quite appropriate. Although doesn't constitute a "theme" as it will be the only bit of ski related stuff that we have on the day. (Its a June wedding, so no snow.....if we were getting married in February, however, I think a theme would become very apparent!!)

I have similar colours to you - we aren't so much having a theme but just colours. Having said that a theme just happened, your OH has the same hobbies as mine and the other day we were arranging the wedding cake with his daughter who is making it. I am having a purple one, on the picture it had butterflies on it, my OH suddenly said I want dragon flies on it and his daughter agreed. I was also struggling with finding a headdress when I found this lady who makes crystal and pearl headdresses with, you have guessed it dragon flies on. She is making one in my colours. The dragonfly scheme sort of materialised out of nowhere.

Maybe if you start planning other bits of the wedding something will just occur to you both. Maybe a favourite place or something.
