Things people say that make me cringe

Panjita, 28 March, 2012 at 09:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 150

Just heard someone say:

"See if he will borrow you the money"

Another one that annoys me:

"Can you learn me how to do that?"

My auntie says the "learn" one and it makes her sound so thick when she really isn't.

When people say "brought" in place of "bought".

'Pacifically' instead of 'specifically' - arrrgh drives me mad. Kids at school who ask can they 'lend a pen' grrrrrrr.

All of these things drive me bonkers. I find it really difficult to stop myself correcting people. Someone (I think it was my brother) once asked me "Can I lend a fiver?", and my response was "Certainly. To whom do you wish to lend it?" ?

I have a woman at work that responds to everything with "Fair play". ?

She also refers to herself as a Seckertary which drives me mad.

Hate that, it just sounds typically chavvy and unintelligent. Somebody I used to be related to said it multiple times in sentences, it just made her sound so thick - Which wasn't far from the truth tbh.

I think I am guilty of 'at the end of the day' although I don't think I say it TOO often! Well, I hope not. Am going to be constantly listening to myself now ☹️

Pretty much everything my little cousin says makes me cringe. She thinks she is from the ghetto. She is not from the ghetto.

    My daughter has started saying words that I dont understand;

sickage and peng being two of them.

I have since discovered that peng means "fit".

SS says Sickage and Sick all the time. It sounds horrible. I've told him he sounds like a chav to try and make him stop but turns out he likes the idea of irritating me...

When H is telling me something that he is going to say to someone (ie it hasn't actually happened at this point) he'll say "I said to her" I'm like nooooooooooo! You havn't said! You are going to say! I pick him up on it every time but his mum does exactly the same thing.

    This drives me nuts.

Also when people say "could of" instead of "could have"

The Portsmouth accent generally makes me cringe... The worst is 'I likes it' or 'I does it'!

    And I was like...

Example: Mary told me that Jane is getting divorced, and I was like, 'no way'.

I've noticed the Beckhams say "At the end of the day" a lot in interviews.

Davina McCall starts most sentences with "Listen" which I find so rude.

    Davina McCall is a tit.

I agree with someone else who pointed out 'could of' instead of 'could have'. Also, people who have no idea about the differences between your/you're, their/there/they're and hear/here. I constantly have to stop myself from correcting peoples' FB statuses... But alas, I digress. These are things people write!

Our work FB page is updated by a marketing company who don't know these differences - drives me mad when I see their posts and there are loads of mis spellings. I don't claim to be the world's best speller but I will always check it over before posting something that the whole world (potentially) can see!

My H has a habit of starting a sentence with 'no offence' before making a statement that is totally non-offensive

Someone on my friend's list (I need to dump her again soon) writes "fill" instead of "feel" all the time. Beyond stupid, how do people not notice that others spell things differently to them, surely it would make you think "Ooh, either I'm wrong or they are, I'll find out!"

People who use adjectives in place of adverbs (notably 'good' for 'well')

    "I ran good today!"

    "You talk funny!"

    "He sings bad."

I can't help but hear these things with an American southern accent. In my step-mom's voice. It also annoys me when she pronounces my name: "am-a-lay" It's barely even recognisable!

RE: Spelling, there is always the chance that they are dyslexic to some degree and therefore it's not really fair to have a go at their spelling. As long as it's readable I don't see the harm.

I hate buzz words. They are rife in work. Touch base, firefighting, synergy, close of play. I can't stand them!

THIS! One of our bosses is such a corporate w@nker. He always wants to 'touch-base' with someone and wants a piece of work by 'close of play'. And firefighting? Really!?

When I said about mis spelling I meant the here/hear thing and coming from a marketing company on our company's FB site it doesn't look professional.

My husband is dyslexic, I'm totally understanding of it but not so much in a professional circumstance

Regarding the buzz words thing, I cringe when my boss says she is "in dialogue" with someone.

Another one is "has ______ got a window free today?"

Another one "We are attempting to reach out to ______" - seems to be the latest one for sales people.
