Things to do in North Devon?

Petal, 14 May, 2009 at 19:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Hi

Just wondering if you had any tips for what to do in North Devon? We are going to Ilfracombe for 1 week next week and I wanted to make the most of our time there (just me and my H). We are open to all sorts but do like history, culture, nature/outdoors type stuff (although I am limited in what I can do outdoorsy wise as I am 23 wks pg).

So give me your tips.

Thanks. x

If you wait a month, you could meet me & Flo!

I shall be watching this thread with interest. A friend has already recommended Lynmouth and Croyde but we too are Ilfracombe virgins so are up for suggestions as to where to go etc.

Well as you can see from my name I am a N. Devon fan and been going for 25 years on and off!

Croyde and Putsborough are the best beaches although Wolacombe is very popular I dont like it there as it just a kid fest.

Ilframcombe I am afraid has seen better days and, there is a theatre there but much of it is arcades and little gift shops. I tend to steer clear of it to be honest, just a bit tacky but some people like it.

Watermouth Castle is great if you have kids

RHS Rosemoor is about 30 mins away and is well worth a visit, its a lovely walk round there and fab garden centre attached.

Barnstable is great for shopping and the old fashioned market street.

Lynton & Lynmouth are great for a visit although small but lots of history about the flooding

Appledore is beautiful and has a lovely cafe there.

Its really all about the beaches there and everywhere you go is very beautiful....

Hope this helps a little bit - have fun!

    Lynmouth (from memory) is lovely.

I think you can nip across to Lundy from up there somewhere.

Ilfracombe is leeeetle bit past it's best which is a shame.
Barnstaple is quite a nice little town (although most of the shops are the same ones you get most places).
If you like National Trust places Arlington Court is really nice.
Just down the road from Lynton is Valley of the Rocks - this is one of my fave places in Devon. Its a coastal walk, nothing too heavy with lovely views of the sea. Although if the weather is pants you will be a tad exposed.
As the others have said Lynmouth is lovely as is the walk to Watersmeet (along the river and through the woods). Some of this walk is up steep inclines so you may not want to venture that way - depends on your fitness levels.
Coombe Martin has a nice little beach and some little gift shops. Quite pretty and they sell fantastic fish and chips there!!!
Woolacombe is a lovely beach stretching for 3 miles to Putsborough at the other end.
A walk round Morte Point at Mortehoe is lovely (again coastal walk).

As you can see it's mostly outdoors stuff but the scenery is beautiful. I could park up on Marine Drive in Woolacombe and just sit and watch the sea all day. Can you tell I have spent a great deal of time down there!!

Thanks for all the info? I'll be sure to take note. Especially about where to get the good fish and chips!

Not North Devon, but well worth a visit is The Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth. It's free entry (donations expected!) and you can pat the furry little things to your heart's content. You can even get in right amoungst them too. We took a picnic and spend most of the day there. I loved it!

https://www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk/visit-us BTW the website has some pretty nasty neglect photos, not on that page I just posted, but elsewhere. Just to warn you!
