Think I jinxed myself :(

MrsDWT, 5 January, 2011 at 19:51 Posted on Planning 0 14

Well I joined this forum today as I decided I needed to start looking at my wedding details ( colours, BM dresses, shoes, dresses) as i already had my venues and photographer booked. I also cleared out all my old venue brouchures etc as thats already booked......

At 6:30 I got a voicemail from my reception venue asking me to call them urgently. I think I knew what was coming as the wedding is still 16 months away so nothing can really be urgent. I called them back to be told the venue will be closing tomorrow as they are not making enough money ☹️ [:'(]

On the upside we still have 16 months to go but on the downside we did look at pretty much all the venues we could think we might be able to afford and this was by far the best and cheapest. All other venues are at least £1000 - £2000 more.

Arrrrrgggghhhhh looks like the search is going to start all over again.

Is anyone using a Town Hall or similar and getting outside caterers in as this was an option we never looked at and I am not sure how cost effective it would be.

Oh no that sucks? Whereabouts in the country are you, hitchers may know some other venues in the region?

Or dont forget just coz these particular people are going out of business does not mean another may not buy out the business and keep the same customers on?

Oh no surely they would have known of the financial difficulties when you originally booked?

    What area are you in?

Well welcome to Hitched and I think you might be my date twin!!!!!!!!! Hooray!

Try not to panic, you'll be able to find something. There are a few brides on here who are using village halls and others have suggested other venues before like cricket clubs or something similar

Ahhh bad news, but if it's better that this happened whilst you still have plenty of time to sort something else Smiley smile

We've gone for that type of arrangement. Ours is an Old Holy Trinity Church.. Beautiful building! It's turning out WAYYYYY cheaper getting outside caterers in.

I live in Swadlincote, derbyshire. I have decided to not get down about it as there will be people whose weddings may be in a few weeks who will have just gotten the same news and I feel bad for them!

I am going to look at hiring the town hall or something. Our sit down meal is 92 and night time reception is 200 (we have a huge close knit family) so basically unless we can find somewhere that can do a sit down meal for under about £25 a head we may have to skip this and just have a big party..... hmmm lots to think about now.

Yay!!!! I have a date twin!!!! How exciting ?

I think I am pretty calm just a bit worried about the finances. I'm going to have a good look around an my HTB has been great, he is going to sit down with me tomorrow night and have a good look at all the village halls, caterers etc in the area.

My wedding is in London (so not near you!) and we're hiring a 13th century restored Barn for not very much (considering the price everywhere else charges!) and getting outside caterers in. Per head we are looking at £26 per head excluding VAT for a three-course sit down meal. It may be cheaper near you as mine is London prices! But there are also other options for you e.g. a hog roast, hot buffet etc that can still be sit-down but is cheaper - it would just mean the guests would have to go up and get their dinner themselves!

Hope you get something sorted! You still have time to find somewhere else - and you never know it may work out for the better! xxx

We are in Leicestershire and have managed to cut down our wedding breakfast to £24 per head! We are having 80 in the day and 120ish for the evening

    Hey Kate,

Can i ask where you are having your reception? Also, did you speak to your venue and negotiate a price with them or was that the price the charged initially? I have never thought about asking if we could possibly change the menu to make the price lower, just always taken the price in the book.

    Thanks

    Hey

We are getting married at Brooksby Hall in Brooksby Leicestershire (Near Melton if you know it)

    www.Brooksbyhall.co.uk

We had a look at the brochure that they sent us and decided to go for a visit and look around. Initially the wedding buffet was between £30 upwards, however upon speaking to the wedding coordinator we asked about how to budget and cut costs and she was brilliant. In the end we got it down by not having tea and coffee afterwards (which i never want if i am at a wedding) and by having our wedding cake as dessert. they were really helpful and couldn't do more to help us. Even by helping to cut the drinks packages down. It cost us £1500 for exclusivity of the venue, including cake stand and knife hire, red carpet, all linen etc..

I think it helps to be cheeky and get the cost down- after all if they want the business they will accommodate as much as they can!! Smiley smile

Oh, how sad, I hope you find something soon. It is not in your area, but my twin found a lovely town hall in Bristol for her reception, and had a slightly quirky catering option of pie and mash (Pieminster pies) to help keep her costs down. I hope you manage to find a similar option!

    Hi

Sorry to hear your venue has cancelled Ive just been looking and Ive seen:

https://www.shottlehall.co.uk/weddings.htm it doesnt have prices on though and may not have enough room

http://www.la-gondola.co.uk/ This one looks ok - and looks to be able to cater for upto 230

https://ringwoodhallhotel.com/weddings.asp/?Id=15 This one looks good as they have can cater upto 250 and have a fixed price deal for 4750 for 2011 - the numbers included are below what you wanted to have but you could always talk to them about adding to the package?

Would you consider more Staffordshire way? Im based in Stoke so know afew more venues etc if you wanted any more help with anything please feel free to give me a shout!

Thank You so much for all the suggestions. I have emailed a la-gondola and ringwoodhall hotel.

Shottlehall was always a favourite of mine however it was too pricey. I want to try and stay closer to home if possible but if we exhaust everything here then i may be looking further afield and I will certainly be in touch.

    Once again thank you!
