Thinking of a present for my bride to be

CrazyCanuck, 10 May, 2011 at 11:21 Posted on Planning 0 25

My fiancée is a keen photographer and she’s documented our entire relationship on her camera. She rarely goes anywhere without the camera hanging round her neck and I think the only thing that stops her trying to become a professional is that she doesn’t think she’s confident/outgoing enough.

She hardly ever prints her photos and this made me think that she’s got all of these photos documenting our relationship, why don’t I take them and make them into a book for her? She’s added a description to her favourites, so it’s not hard to see which ones she likes most and I was thinking I could add some comments of my own underneath the pictures and she might like reading it on the day of the wedding. The only problem would be trying to find somewhere that can print it all in a good enough quality. If anyone has done this before then please tell me who you used if you can.

I’ve got over a year until the wedding to figure this out, but it just occurred to me that I won’t have much time to get it together because we work similar hours and live together so I’ll have to do it in whatever bits of time I have to myself. I’m sure this gift wouldn’t appeal to everyone, but imagine photography was one of your interests, would you appreciate such a gift?

It would appeal to me, even not as a photographer!

I think Blurb has been recommended for creating books with the photos if that would be easier for you.

Yes, that's a lovely idea. I'd be really touched by a gift like that.

In terms of where to get it done... Snapfish and other online photo places offer that sort of thing, but I've no idea on the quality. What about getting a really nice old-fashioned photo album and sticking the photos in there, shabby chic style?

I made something simular for my OH last valentines day - a photo for each of the special times we have had with a commentary of what we were thinking/doing at the time etc.

I can't really advise on quality etc, as non-Togs we are happy to have ours printed from good old Tesco.

That sounds like such a lovely idea, and scarily like me too. Although an idea..You could always put together a collection of her photo's that you like with a description? Just a thought. You could always make a photo book with one half her favourites and the other half yours. I know jessops do photo books, but i've never used them so i don't know how good they would be.

    xx

I got a photobook printed from PhotoBox for my FSIL's hen night pics and she loved it. The quality was brilliant and will be fine for you if you're using photos that your OH has taken, but I had a bit of a problem where I'd taken a couple of pics from Facebook as the resolution wasn't as good and they came out a bit blurry. Where they were my photos though, it was great.

I think it's a very lovely idea for a present.

I would love this as a gift. I am a keen amateur too and I always have my photobooks printed through Bob Books now. I have tried many different providers and these give the best quality in my opinion. Go for the hardback photographic books (which lay flat so you can put pictures across two pages if you want without losing anyn of the picture).

The have a fantastic book gallery on their website where you can see other peoples books and the software is easy to use and has so many possibilities in terms of layout, colours and so on.

    Hope that helps.

Here is the book gallery - some really inspiring ideas how you can use it for what you want to do www.bobbooks.largeblue.net/book_gallery/

I've used Snapfish/Truprint (I think they're the same company when it's all stripped away) and have never had any problems - I use them every year to make calendars for my grandparents too.

This is a really thoughtful idea, well done! I only wish my OH was plotting something lovely like this........I'm not holding my breath ?

Canuck - I think that is a fantastic idea.

My OH and I both studied art at college (back in the day haha) and he used to make me cards and albums etc. It was always appreciated as such a personal and thoughtful present. I say a definite yes! x

Sounds lovely! What about the photographer that you have hired for the wedding, perhaps they could help to point you in the right direction?

Just to add to the consensus that it's a lovely idea. Perhaps if you go for sticking photos in an album for her rather than getting the lot printed, you could leave the last page blank with a note saying "For a photo from our wedding, to be taken today...!"

So I didn't think of a really stupid idea! I had been thinking about it quite a lot because I can't buy her jewellery because she likes to choose her own and I wanted something that had meaning behind it and that she would appreciate. I wish i'd thought to ensure that all of the milestones in our relationship happened at nice looking places though, if i'd known that she'd take a picture of the place we first kissed and treasure it I would have chosen better than a vandalised bus stop! Now that old, rundown bus stop has to be in the book because she loves the picture. It's not about me, i'll deal. Thanks ladies!

Certainly not a stupid idea!! I would have been stoked for OH to have done something like this for me on our wedding day - even though it would have produced mountains of tears from me!! - and I think that FMJ's idea of the final page being blank would add an extra, lovely depth too.

    Go for it, I say.?

Edited: to correct the fact that I called my new H, OH - old habits are obviously hard to break!!!?

I did a similar thing for my friends bday present last year. I got it through Truprint - it was really good, and they sometimes have deals on the photobooks. Boots do them too. As so Snappy Snaps. There are lots of places that would be able to do this for you, its just a case of finding the cheapest and best fit for you. x

I always use MyPublisher for my photobooks - the quality is fab and you have the choice of hardback, linen bound, leather bound etc x
